Vermont lets you complete the learner's permit application and knowledge test online. DMV may verify application information without seeing identification in person; if verification does not clear or another service requires it, DMV can direct you to follow-up or an office visit.
Most of the learner-permit process is handled online. An office visit is not a universal final step for every first-time permit applicant.
| Service | Online? | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Start the learner-permit application | Yes | Use Vermont DMV's learner-permit/myDMV process. |
| Take the official knowledge test | Yes | The learner-permit knowledge test is completed online. |
| Identity/application verification | DMV review | DMV can verify information without an in-person ID check and may contact you if additional proof or follow-up is needed. |
| Office appointment | When needed | Schedule one only when DMV directs you or the service/exam requires an office visit. |
| Check or manage DMV services | Yes, where offered | Use myDMV for available account and credential services. |
| Replace an eligible lost permit | Yes | Online replacement may be available when the transaction qualifies. |
The permanent card is centrally issued and mailed after the permit is issued. Do not book an office visit solely because you passed the online knowledge test unless DMV tells you one is required.
Passing the knowledge exam does not automatically issue the learner's permit. You still need to complete the permit application process so DMV can receive the required information, documents, and fees.
DMV reviews the application information and runs verification checks. An in-person ID review is not required in every case.
What happens if Vermont DMV cannot verify the application? DMV will notify you to correct the information or complete the follow-up it requests before the learner's permit is sent.
Use myDMV and the instructions provided after your application to check available status information. The physical card is mailed after issuance, so keep any valid temporary permit or receipt DMV provides until the card arrives.
If DMV contacts you for additional verification, complete that follow-up before assuming the permit has been fully issued.
Once your learner's permit is issued, follow the Permit Driving Rules guide for supervision and other driving restrictions. See Required Practice Hours for practice and logging requirements.
A Vermont learner's permit is valid for 2 years. If it expires, see Permit Validity & Renewal in the Eligibility & Documents guide for the renewal rules; expiration alone does not mean you must automatically restart the whole application and test process.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
