Most learner-permit application and knowledge-test steps are completed online. If Vermont DMV directs you to an office or you need an in-person service, the visit starts with check-in and the documents or follow-up items DMV asked you to bring.
If you have a scheduled office visit, bring the appointment confirmation and any documents DMV specifically requested for that transaction. Staff will review the information needed for the reason you are there.
Use Required Documents to check the identity, SSN, residency, and minor-consent documents for your transaction.
Go for the specific follow-up DMV requested. Depending on the transaction, staff may review documents, handle payment, complete a photo or vision-related step, or resolve information that could not be verified online. Bring the notice or instructions DMV sent you so the visit stays focused on that issue.
For photo-specific preparation, see Permit Photo in the Appointments & SOS guide.
The Vermont learner's permit knowledge test is completed online, not at an office kiosk as the normal permit-testing path.
If you do not pass, you must wait at least one day before another attempt and follow the online retake instructions. You do not need to book a new office knowledge-test appointment solely because you failed the online test.
For test format, passing score, and preparation, use the permit-test guide. After a failed attempt, see Failed Knowledge Test for the retake steps.
After you pass the online knowledge test, complete the remaining application, payment, and verification steps Vermont DMV gives you. DMV can verify application information electronically and may contact you if additional proof or an office visit is needed.
If DMV directs you to an office, follow the instructions for that specific transaction. Do not assume every learner-permit applicant must complete an in-office kiosk test or identical office sequence.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
