A lost South Dakota instruction permit can be replaced online, by mail, or in person. Use the replacement method that fits your eligibility and current address.
Do not drive without a valid permit credential, and update your address before requesting the duplicate.
Replace a lost South Dakota permit online via MySD ($20 plus $2 processing), by mail, or in person at a Driver Exam Station. One online replacement is allowed every 10 years.
| Replacement Method | Fee | Card or Temporary Credential | Can You Drive While Waiting? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online via MySD | $20 + $2 online processing | Replacement card is mailed | Not without a valid permit credential |
| By mail | $20 | Replacement card is mailed | Not without a valid permit credential |
| In person at a state Driver Exam Station | $20; card-payment fee applies if paying by card | Replacement card issued the same day | You may drive once you have the valid replacement, following permit restrictions |
A Brookings permit holder's card mailed to their old apartment after a move - forwarding had expired. An in-person reissue was required and the replacement took 12 days. Update your address in the SD DPS portal before the permit issues, not after.
DPS does not list a separate damaged-card path on its replacement page. If your permit is damaged, use the duplicate/replacement page for the available online, mail, and in-person options, or contact Driver Licensing if you are unsure which option applies.
If the permit was stolen, file a police report first and bring the report number to the DPS to prevent fraudulent use.
Start the duplicate/replacement process right away using the same online, mail, or in-person options. If the theft involved other identification or suspected identity fraud, handle that separately as well. The DPS replacement page has the current replacement steps.
If you meet the online or mail eligibility rules, you can request a duplicate without visiting a South Dakota exam station. DPS allows an online or mail duplicate only within its stated eligibility limits; otherwise contact Driver Licensing before relying on an out-of-state replacement plan.
In-person replacement requires original identity document, two South Dakota address documents, parental consent if under 18, and the $20 replacement fee. Cash or card accepted; card payments carry a $2.00 or 2.95% administrative fee, whichever is greater.
Check the DPS replacement-document checklist and card-issuance and delivery guidance before choosing a replacement method.
Carry your valid replacement card or a valid DPS-issued temporary permit before driving. Losing the card does not remove the requirement to carry a permit credential.
Contact Driver Licensing before using the old card again. Do not assume both cards remain usable after a replacement is issued.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
