South Dakota Instruction Permit Photo: Taken at the Station, No Retakes Allowed

Yes. South Dakota takes a permit photo at the Driver Exam Station, and that image becomes part of your credential record.

South Dakota Permit Photo Timing and Process

Your SD permit photo is taken at the Driver Exam Station counter immediately after passing the vision screening and knowledge test. You cannot submit your own photo from home.

• Timing:After passing vision and knowledge tests, before permit issuance
• Location:At the exam station counter - not a separate photo booth
• Appearance:Treat this as a permanent record photo. It may appear on your next two or three credentials.

South Dakota DPS Permit Photo Guidelines and Restrictions

South Dakota follows REAL ID photo standards - neutral expression, no sunglasses, no hats or caps. Religious headwear is permitted if your full face remains visible.

• [NO] Facial Expression:Neutral or a slight closed-mouth smile. Wide grins are rejected.
• [YES] Glasses:Prescription glasses allowed; may be asked to remove them if lens glare distorts the image. No sunglasses or tinted lenses.
• [YES] Headwear:No hats or caps. Religious or medical headwear is permitted if the full face is visible.
• Clothing:Wear a solid, darker color to contrast the station's light blue or off-white background.

Can You Retake Your South Dakota Permit Photo?

Retakes are only allowed for technical errors like camera malfunction or blurred images. Personal preference including hair, expression, or appearance is not grounds for a retake.

• Eyes closed (blinking during capture)
• Blurry image due to equipment
• Poor lighting from a malfunctioning station light

A Rapid City applicant asked for a retake because their hair was messy. The examiner declined - the photo met all technical standards and was accepted into the system. The permit issued with that image. Arrive prepared.

South Dakota Permit Photo Appearance

The same digital image prints on your temporary paper permit and your permanent plastic card. SD stores it digitally and may reuse it for your next credential unless you request an update.

• Temporary Permit:Photo printed on the paper document - same image, lower resolution print
• Plastic Card:High-resolution print on the permanent permit
• Future Credentials:The Restricted Minor's Permit and potentially your first full license may use this same image unless you update it
