At a South Dakota Driver Exam Station, you complete six steps in sequence: check-in, document verification, fee payment ($38), vision screening and photo, computerized knowledge test, and permit issuance. The entire visit runs 45 to 90 minutes.
A vision screening is part of the visit, so bring corrective lenses if you normally use them. Get the South Dakota Driver Manualand the Driver License/ID Card Applicationbefore you arrive.
The SD DPS permit process runs in six steps: check-in, document verification, fee payment, vision screening and photo, computerized knowledge test, and permit issuance - all in one visit.
Plan on about 45 to 90 minutes for a smooth visit. Check-in, document review, the vision screening, the knowledge test, and station workload can all affect the total time, so do not plan around the test itself alone.
For a first-time applicant under 18, a parent or guardian should attend because parental consent is required. South Dakota's teen-driver guidance says the applicant and guardian need to visit a licensing location. For the knowledge test, DPS says children and pets are not allowed in the testing area. Follow station staff instructions on where the guardian waits during testing. See the South Dakota teen-driver guidance.
The station completes the vision screening and knowledge test during the visit. For an unrestricted credential, the vision standard is 20/40 with both eyes and no worse than 20/50 in either eye.
After passing, return to the counter for permit issuance. State Driver Exam Stations issue the card the same day. Temporary paper credentials and mailed cards apply to eligible county/city issuance transactions.
For card-delivery timing, see the processing-time section in the South Dakota eligibility and document guide.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
