Digital Permit Access
Texas Digital Learner's Permit: Why TxT Does Not Replace the Physical Credential
Texas does not currently provide a legally usable digital learner license through TxT, Apple Wallet, Google Wallet or a phone screenshot. TxT supports eligible online transactions, but it is not a mobile driving credential that replaces the physical learner license.
No Digital Permit Exists in Texas - Here's Why
| Item | What It Is | Can It Replace the Physical Learner License? |
|---|---|---|
| TxT / Texas.gov account | An online service for eligible government and driver-license transactions | No |
| Phone photo or screenshot | A personal copy of the credential | No |
| Temporary paper learner credential | The physical credential issued while the permanent card is being produced | Yes, while it is valid |
| Permanent plastic learner license | The physical learner credential mailed by DPS | Yes |
Do not confuse online access to a driver-license transaction with a digital driver's license.
Does TxT display a digital learner-license card or barcode?
No current TxT service is listed as a legally usable mobile learner-license card. TxT can handle certain driver-license transactions, including an eligible learner-to-provisional upgrade, but that is different from storing a digital credential that replaces the physical permit. See TxT services.
Can a Screenshot or Scan Replace the Physical Permit?
A screenshot, scan or phone image does not replace the physical learner credential for driving. Carry the physical temporary paper credential or the permanent card when you drive under supervision.
If you drive without carrying the required credential, the legal consequences belong to the separate Forgot Permit While Driving page.
Can I use a printed scan or photocopy if my original learner permit is damaged?
No. A scan or photocopy does not become a replacement credential. If the original is damaged enough that it cannot be relied on, use the DPS replacement process rather than driving on a homemade copy.
Screenshots and Phone Images Are Not Accepted as the Permit
Do not rely on a screenshot or app image as your learner license during a traffic stop or a DPS driving test. For the full road-test document checklist, use the Road Test Documents page.
TxT should be treated as an online service channel, not as proof that Texas has issued a mobile driver's license.
Managing and Protecting Your Physical Texas Permit
Keep the temporary paper credential protected until the permanent card arrives, then carry the physical card when driving. A photo can help you record the permit number, but it does not become a substitute credential.
The six-month teen rule is a minimum holding period before progressing to the next license stage; it is not the learner license's general expiration period.
If the physical credential is lost or stolen, follow the separate Lost / Stolen Permit replacement process rather than treating a saved phone image as a replacement.
Can I laminate the temporary paper Texas learner permit? DPS does not publish a learner-specific lamination rule. The safest approach is to keep the temporary permit as issued and protect it from damage without altering the document. If it becomes unreadable, contact DPS instead of relying on an altered or copied version.
Does a photo of my permit help if the physical card is lost?
A photo can help you keep the permit number and other record details, but it is not a legal replacement for the credential. If the physical permit is lost, follow the DPS replacement process.
