Texas DPS driver license services are appointment-based. Book ahead when possible. If you arrive without an appointment, a limited same-day slot may be available through the office kiosk or online scheduler, but availability is not guaranteed.
Use the Texas DPS Scheduler to book the learner-license service you need. DPS handles in-office driver license services by appointment, and appointments can be scheduled up to six months ahead.
If you arrive without a booked appointment, the office kiosk may let you schedule a same-day appointment if one is still available. Most offices release only a limited number, so do not treat same-day service as guaranteed walk-in access.
Texas DPS explains the current appointment and same-day process on its Driver License Services - Appointments page.
Yes. Texas DPS says an appointment can be scheduled for another person if the person booking it has all required information, although DPS does not recommend doing this when it is unnecessary. Use the teen applicant's information for the appointment. A parent or guardian may also be allowed inside when parental authorization or another business need requires them. See Texas DPS appointment guidance.
If your preferred office has no openings, check the scheduler again later and search nearby locations. Cancellations and limited same-day appointments can create new openings.
| Option | How It Works | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled appointment | Booked in advance through the Texas DPS Scheduler | Your best option when you can plan ahead |
| Same-day appointment | A limited appointment released for that day, booked online or through an office kiosk when available | Not guaranteed and can fill quickly |
| Standby | Some offices may offer limited standby service after cancellations or no-shows | Availability varies by office and should not replace a booked appointment |
For broader office-volume and wait-time guidance, use the separate DPS Hours & Best Times page rather than relying on a fixed wait estimate here.
DPS does not publish a rule encouraging duplicate bookings. Its scheduler is built around rescheduling: when you confirm a new appointment through the reschedule process, the existing appointment is automatically cancelled. Use that process instead of holding extra slots you do not plan to use.
Slots cancel after 30 minutes late. You must rebook through the scheduler. Multiple no-shows can trigger a temporary lockout from booking.
Cancel online via the scheduler using your confirmation details. You can also call the automated line at 512-424-2600. Cancel before 8:00 AM on your appointment day to avoid a no-show mark.
Dallas's San Jacinto Day holiday closure is a Texas-only trap: a family arrived to a dark DPS office on San Jacinto Day-not listed in the booking confirmation. Rescheduled 4 days out. San Jacinto Day does not appear on national calendars, so it surprises out-of-state residents every year. Learn more about retaking the failed knowledge test. For questions about rescheduling or cancellations, call 512-424-2600 if online fails.
You do not need to cancel just because the confirmation message is missing. Texas DPS says appointment confirmation information can be retrieved by logging back in to the appointment scheduler.
Can I change the service type on an existing DPS appointment? DPS explains how to reschedule an appointment but does not publish a separate promise that the service type can always be edited in place. If you selected the wrong service, use the scheduler to book the correct service. Confirming the new appointment through rescheduling cancels the old one automatically.
Keep this step focused on the appointment itself. Confirm the office, service type, date and check-in instructions before you leave.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."
