Tennessee does not publish a blanket learner-permit fast-track for military families. Military documents can help satisfy specific identity or residency requirements, but they do not replace the normal credential documentation. Active-duty Tennessee license holders stationed outside the state may qualify for the separate Code 30 provision.
Military status does not replace Tennessee's normal proof requirements for an original permit. A military ID may serve as qualifying identity evidence, and documents such as an LES may qualify as residency evidence when they meet Tennessee's rules.
| Situation | What Changes | What Does Not Change |
|---|---|---|
| Active-duty Tennessee license holder stationed outside Tennessee | May qualify for Code 30 on the Tennessee license | Code 30 is not a blanket permit benefit for dependents |
| Military family stationed in Tennessee | Military documents may satisfy specific identity or residency items when accepted | Normal permit eligibility, testing, and required documentation still apply |
| New Tennessee resident with an out-of-state credential | Uses Tennessee's normal new-resident transfer rules | Transfer treatment is not a special military fast-track |
Yes. Eligible active-duty Tennessee license holders stationed outside Tennessee can request Code 30 by mail or in person. A mail request needs the Military Checklist, qualifying orders or an accepted substitute, a mailing address, the required fee, and a contact email. Follow Tennessee's Military Personnel instructions.
No. Tennessee treats assignment to Fort Campbell as reassignment back to Tennessee, even though the base spans Tennessee and Kentucky. Code 30 is for eligible active-duty Tennessee license holders based outside Tennessee.
Can National Guard members or military dependents get Tennessee Code 30? No. Tennessee specifically says National Guard members and family members of military personnel are not eligible for Code 30.
Standard permit and license fees generally apply to military members and dependents. Tennessee does not publish a general learner-permit fee waiver or same-day military fast-track for these applications.
See the appointment guides and document and processing-time guides unless Tennessee provides a specific military rule for your transaction.
Stationed in Tennessee: Bring the normal permit documents. Military identification or an LES can help only where Tennessee accepts that document for the specific proof category.
Moving into Tennessee with another state's credential: Follow Tennessee's standard new-resident transfer rules. See Permit Transfer / Moving rather than assuming military status waives testing or documents.
Code 30: This provision is for eligible active-duty Tennessee license holders stationed outside Tennessee. It does not automatically apply to dependents or to an out-of-state license simply because the holder is military.
Turning 18 changes which teen GDL requirements apply, but those age-transition rules are not military-specific. See Turning 18 With a Permit for the before-and-after comparison.
Military status does not create a separate general license-fee schedule for this transition. See the Tennessee fees guide for Class D costs and transaction-specific charges.
The road-test and Class D upgrade process follows Tennessee's normal licensing rules. See Road Test & License for eligibility, scheduling, documents, and testing.
Tennessee does not generally require adults age 18 or older to complete driver education before applying for a Class D license. This is a standard adult rule, not a military exception. See Driver Ed Requirement for details.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
