| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Exact reprint | An eligible valid TIPIC that is lost, stolen, destroyed, or mutilated may be eligible for an exact reprint. The reprint keeps the original expiration date. |
| Information changes | If your address or other credential information needs to change, handle that change separately rather than treating it as an exact reprint. |
| Expired TIPIC | An expired TIPIC is not a valid credential for an exact reprint. Follow the expiration/reapplication process instead. |
| Out-of-state loss | Eligible holders may be able to request an exact reprint online; being outside Ohio does not automatically require an immediate return to Ohio. |
Start by checking whether the TIPIC is still valid and whether you need an exact reprint or a change to the credential. Ohio law allows eligible holders of a valid temporary instruction permit to request an exact reprint online when the credential is lost, stolen, destroyed, or mutilated.
| Situation | Correct Route |
|---|---|
| Valid TIPIC lost, stolen, destroyed, or mutilated with no information change | An online exact reprint may be available through Ohio BMV Online Services. |
| Online reprint is unavailable or you need in-person help | Use a deputy registrar location for the appropriate duplicate/replacement transaction. |
| Address or other information needs to change | Handle the information change separately instead of requesting an unchanged exact reprint. |
| TIPIC is expired | Follow the expiration/reapplication rules rather than the valid-permit reprint process. |
Ohio allows no more than two exact reprints between initial issuance and renewal, or between renewals. If you have already used those reprints, check the next available Ohio BMV credential transaction instead of assuming another exact reprint will be approved.
An exact reprint is available only for a valid Ohio credential issued after July 2, 2018. The reprint is an exact copy of the last-issued credential and is handled through Ohio's online reprint process.
For an online exact reprint, Ohio uses information already associated with the valid credential and requires the applicant to certify that the credential was lost, stolen, destroyed, or mutilated. An in-person duplicate transaction may require identity verification from the BMV record, and additional documentation can be requested when needed.
This is different from a first-time TIPIC application, so do not assume that the entire original identity, Social Security, residency, and parental-consent document package is required for every replacement.
If you do not qualify for an exact reprint, Ohio BMV must notify you why the application was denied. Use that reason to determine the correct next transaction rather than simply submitting the same reprint request again.
An exact reprint must match the last-issued credential. If your name, address, or other credential information needs to change, complete the appropriate information-change transaction instead of using an unchanged reprint.
A reprint or duplicate transaction has its own current BMV fee structure. Check the amount shown for the transaction or the current Ohio BMV fee page before paying rather than relying on an old flat replacement amount: Ohio BMV fees.
Does replacing an Ohio learner's permit extend its expiration date? No. An exact reprint keeps the original expiration date; it does not extend the life of the TIPIC. Card-delivery timing is a separate issue from replacement eligibility.
Can you drive while waiting for the replacement? Only drive when you have a valid credential or temporary document that Ohio permits you to use while the replacement is being processed. Do not treat a photo or screenshot of the missing TIPIC as a replacement credential.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
