New Mexico MVD takes the learner's-permit photo at the office. Because the image is used for facial-recognition matching, expect strict photo standards such as no glasses or hats and a neutral expression; retake rules are explained below.
Yes. The photo is mandatory and is taken digitally at the MVD office during your application appointment, you do not need to bring a photo from outside. See full photo guidelines at mvd.newmexico.gov/chapter-2-non-commercial-license.
New Mexico requires glasses to be removed for driver's license and ID photos. Headwear that obscures the face is not allowed, and the photo must clearly show the applicant's full face.
A student in Las Cruces wore a baseball cap to the MVD for sun protection and had to remove it, leaving hat hair for their permit photo. An applicant in Rio Rancho forgot to remove transition lenses, they appeared dark under office lighting and triggered a retake for potential glare issues. Remove all eyewear before stepping to the camera.
Get the REAL ID docs list at mvd.newmexico.gov/chapter-6 for acceptable identity documents before your appointment.
Full New Mexico permit rules are at the New Mexico learner's permit guide.
You cannot request a retake simply because you dislike your picture.
Retakes are only granted for technical issues like blinking or lighting errors. Practice a neutral expression in the mirror before your appointment to avoid a surprised or unflattering look you're stuck with for four years. A teen in Albuquerque blinked during the flash at the Montgomery office and the clerk retook the photo immediately at no cost, that is the standard process for a technical failure.
Your photo is taken at the MVD as part of credential issuance and appears on the issued permit. MVD policy requires a new photograph at later credential-issuance visits, so the permit photo does not simply transfer to a provisional or full driver's license. For card mailing and delivery timing, see the Processing Time guidance.
The photo step does not replace the underlying permit requirements. Before issuance, applicants must meet the age, driver-education, document, and other requirements that apply to their permit path. See Eligibility & Documents for those details.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
