New Mexico Learner's Permit Online Services: What You Can Do and What Requires an Office Visit

You must be at least 15 years old to get a New Mexico instructional permit. You cannot complete the process entirely online. The MVD uses a hybrid process, pre-fill the application and schedule appointments online, but the knowledge exam, document verification, vision screening, and permit issuance all require an in-person office visit. This distinction catches many applicants off guard.

Can You Get a New Mexico Learner's Permit Online?

No. A final in-person visit to an MVD Field Office is mandatory to verify documents, take tests, and receive your physical permit. Online tools cover scheduling and pre-filling only.

You CAN do the following online: pre-fill the MyMVD Online Services application, schedule appointments via the MVD Appointments Scheduler, and enroll in the 'None for the Road' course for first-time licensees aged 18-24 via UNM Continuing Education. Get the referral card from your TSB-approved driver education school once you have completed the required classroom hours.

You MUST visit an office for: the knowledge exam at an MVD field office or MVD-contracted driver education school, document verification, vision screening, photo, and permit issuance with the $10.00 fee. See full requirements at MVD fees PDF.

New Mexico MVD Online Services: What the Portal Actually Covers

New Mexico's MyMVD portal simplifies several steps. Pre-fill your application online before visiting to avoid form errors on MVD office kiosks, which often have unresponsive touchscreens and can reset.

Can you upload learner's permit documents to New Mexico MVD online before your appointment?

MVD's learner-permit instructions require the applicant to go to a field office with the required documents. The public permit process does not list a separate online document-approval step before the visit, so bring the required originals for the credential type you are applying for.

Can you complete and submit the entire learner's permit application through MyMVD? No. Online tools can handle pre-filling and appointment steps, but permit issuance still requires the in-person document check, vision test, photo, and any required testing.

Can You Take the New Mexico Knowledge Exam Online?

No. The knowledge exam is not a take-at-home online test. For approved testing locations, provider options, format, and what to expect, see the New Mexico Permit Test Prep guide.

Can You Check Your New Mexico Permit Status Online?

You can check the mailing status of your permit online after processing using the official 'Where's My License?' tool. Enter your driver's license number from your temporary permit. For card-delivery timing and temporary-permit validity, see the Processing Time guidance. If the status does not update or the card does not arrive as expected, call MVD Customer Service at 888-683-4636.

• Real-time application review or pending approval status is not available online.
• A commercial tracking number for the mailed permit does not exist.
• Pending violations or holds not yet processed cannot be checked online.

Can you see whether your permit card has been mailed online?

Yes. After MVD issues the temporary credential, use the official Where's My License? service to check the permanent card's status. This is a card-status tool, not live tracking of every step in the permit application.

The New Mexico MVD Has No Dedicated App: Use the MyMVD Portal Instead

New Mexico does not have a dedicated official MVD app.

All online services run through the MyMVD Online Services website. The site works best on updated browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox). Disable pop-up blockers to view appointment confirmations. Bookmark the MyMVD portal on your phone and enable desktop mode, the mobile site loads slowly on the appointment calendar and can time out during peak hours, causing missed slots.
