To replace a lost learner's permit in Delaware, visit a DMV office with required documents and a $20 fee (updated October 2025). You cannot legally drive without the physical permit in your possession.
Delaware requires an in-person visit for most permit replacements, especially for drivers under 18. You cannot legally drive while waiting for a replacement. Drivers over 18 using the online portal or kiosk will receive a temporary paper document while waiting for their new permit card in the mail (within two weeks).
Is the replacement process the same for a damaged Delaware learner's permit? Delaware DMV allows a duplicate when a credential is lost, stolen, or destroyed. A badly damaged permit therefore belongs in the same replacement process. If you still have the damaged card, bring it with you rather than discarding it before the visit.
The replacement fee is $20.00 (updated October 2025). Processing is immediate for in-person replacements; mailed requests take 7-10 business days. View the full Required Documents Table for what to bring. Verify DMV hours at dmv.de.gov before visiting.
Complete Delaware permit details are on the Delaware permit guide.

Does a replacement Delaware learner's permit keep the same expiration date? A duplicate replaces the credential; it does not restart the permit period. Delaware DMV states that duplicate licenses and ID cards keep the same expiration date as the credential that was lost or stolen.
Delaware DMV's normal duplicate-license instructions do not list a police report as a required document for a lost, stolen, or destroyed credential. You may still choose to report the theft, but follow DMV's duplicate requirements for the replacement permit.
If DMV correspondence or a replacement credential is being sent by mail, an outdated address can cause delays. Update your address with Delaware DMV after a move and confirm the correct mailing information before requesting a replacement.
Use the replacement credential, not the old card. Once a duplicate has been issued, do not keep switching between two versions of the permit. Destroy the old card or ask DMV how it should be disposed of if you are unsure.
For full GDL duplicate permit details, visit dmv.de.gov. Only the original sponsor can sign for the replacement unless official sponsorship transfer paperwork is filed. Duplicate permits will not be mailed to a P.O. Box, provide a physical residential address. "The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
