SCDMV captures the credential photo during the in-person permit process. For the full application sequence, use the dedicated Application Process guide.
No. The credential photo is captured by SCDMV as part of the in-person permit transaction; a personal photo does not replace that step.
Wear solid colours, remove glasses and hats, keep a neutral expression. Religious headwear is allowed if it does not obscure the face or cast shadows.
Can you wear makeup or jewelry in your SCDMV permit photo? Ordinary makeup and small jewelry are not the main issue; your face still needs to be clearly visible. Be ready to remove or adjust anything that creates glare or blocks facial features if the SCDMV employee asks.
Retakes are only allowed for technical errors caught by the clerk immediately after the shot, such as closed eyes or camera glare. Disliking the photo is not a valid reason.
For South Carolina permit process details, see the South Carolina permit guide.
Can you request a new photo after a major change in appearance? Ask SCDMV whether a new in-person photo is appropriate for the credential update you need. A major appearance change does not mean the card is automatically reissued, so handle the request through the branch rather than assuming a retake is guaranteed.
The photo taken for your permit is typically reused when you upgrade to a full driver's licence, so it may appear on your ID for up to 8 years.
| Item | Cost |

For applicants under 18, Form 447-CM must be completed by the adult in the presence of an SCDMV employee or authorized agent. If another responsible adult signs under the form's allowed process, follow the notarized-permission requirement on the form. See the Application Form guide for the full consent procedure.
Arrive well before the 4:00 PM check-in cutoff. Long lines at offices like the one in Myrtle Beach often mean a 2+ hour wait. Late arrival is the most common reason for missing the test and photo opportunity entirely.
Do not assume renewal automatically means a new photo. If a new image matters to you, use an in-person branch transaction rather than relying on a remote renewal route that may use the image already on file.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
