Yes, an eligible Montana learner credential can be added to a supported phone wallet. Montana law allows an authorized digital or hard-copy driver license to satisfy the carry requirement, but carrying the physical credential as a backup is still practical because digital acceptance is not universal.

Montana began offering Mobile ID on September 1, 2025, allowing eligible credentials to be added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The digital credential can be used where authorized and accepted, including certain driving and identity-verification situations. Keep the physical credential as a backup because some businesses, agencies and out-of-state users may still require it.
You cannot use a screenshot, photo or homemade PDF as a digital permit. Set up the credential through the supported Apple Wallet or Google Wallet flow after an eligible Montana credential has been issued.
For current device and setup requirements, use the official Montana Mobile ID instructions. If the underlying permit is lost, stolen or issued with an error, use the replacement/correction process rather than treating Mobile ID as a substitute for fixing the credential record.
Yes, if your Montana credential and device are eligible for the supported Samsung Wallet flow. Use the current Montana Mobile ID instructions rather than a screenshot or photo of the card.
No. REAL ID status is not required just to add an otherwise eligible Montana credential to a supported digital wallet.
Is Montana Mobile ID free? Montana MVD does not charge a separate fee to add or use Mobile ID. Your normal phone, data or device costs still apply.
Do not assume every wallet handles multiple devices the same way. Apple supports its paired Apple Watch flow, while Google Wallet stores the digital ID on one device. Follow the setup rules for the wallet you use.
An authorized Montana digital license can satisfy the state's carry requirement, but acceptance depends on the situation and the verifier's technology. Carrying the physical credential remains a sensible backup, especially outside Montana or anywhere digital ID is not supported.
| Feature | Mobile ID | Physical Credential | Temporary Paper Credential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving possession in Montana | Can satisfy the carry requirement when it is an authorized digital credential | Yes | Yes while valid |
| TSA / identity use | Accepted at participating checkpoints and other supported verifiers | Broadly accepted when the credential meets the verifier's requirements | Acceptance is limited; it is not a permanent REAL ID card |
| Phone or battery needed | Yes | No | No |
| Permanent credential | Digital representation of the issued credential | Yes | No; temporary only |
If the phone is lost or stolen, use the wallet provider's account and device-security tools to lock or remove access where available. If the battery is dead, you cannot present the digital credential from that phone. A physical credential remains the simplest backup.
Montana Mobile ID is accepted only where the verifier supports the digital credential. At TSA, it can be used at participating checkpoints; it is not correct to say every traveler must always present the physical REAL ID card. Carry an acceptable physical ID as backup when traveling because participation and equipment can vary.
Use Mobile ID only at participating TSA checkpoints. Participation can change and may not cover every checkpoint at an airport, so check the current Montana MVD or TSA participating-location information before traveling and carry an acceptable physical ID as backup.
You need an eligible issued Montana credential before you can add it to a supported wallet. The first-time permit application itself is handled through the regular MVD process.
For supervised-driving rules, use the Montana driving-rules guide.
Digital or physical format does not change learner-permit supervision or driving restrictions.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
