Maine BMV does not currently issue a dedicated mobile or app-based learner's permit. However, Maine law allows a learner's permit holder to carry and display the issued permit in electronic form to law enforcement. A screenshot of an application confirmation is not the same as an issued permit. Maine learner's permit guide
What to carry: Keep the issued learner's permit available in physical form or an electronic representation that satisfies Maine's carry-and-display law. Keep the other vehicle documents required for the trip as well. For road-test document rules, use the dedicated Road Test & License pages.
Maine does not issue a dedicated BMV mobile learner's permit or app credential. That is different from the state law allowing an issued permit to be carried and displayed electronically.
Maine Title 29-A, section 1408 allows a licensee, including a learner's permit holder, to carry and display the license or permit in electronic form. This does not mean the BMV currently issues a separate official mobile permit.
Maine law allows a learner's permit to be carried in electronic form and defines that as a digital representation of the information contained in the physical permit on a portable electronic device. The law does not require a particular app or file format. The electronic version still needs to be current, readable, and available when a law enforcement officer asks to inspect it.
Electronic display can satisfy the carry-and-display rule for law-enforcement inspection, but it does not create a separate BMV mobile credential. For BMV or road-test transactions, follow the document instructions for that transaction and keep the physical permit available when required.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does Maine BMV issue an official mobile learner's permit? | No dedicated BMV mobile/app permit is currently issued. |
| Can an electronic representation satisfy the carry-and-display rule? | Yes. Title 29-A, section 1408 allows a learner's permit holder to carry and display the issued permit in electronic form to law enforcement. |
| When should I still bring the physical permit? | Bring it for BMV and road-test transactions when the service requires the original credential, and keep it as a practical backup. |
Do I need internet access to show an electronic Maine learner's permit? The statute requires you to be able to produce the electronic version; it does not say the representation must be loaded from the internet. Keep it stored so it can be displayed when needed.
The Maine BMV does not have an app or portal for learner's permits.
Maine BMV does not currently list an official learner's permit credential for Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Maine's electronic-display law is separate from a state-issued mobile-wallet credential, so do not assume that a wallet app itself creates or validates a permit.
Required items for Maine learner permit holders:
| Document | Required? | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your learner's permit | Yes | Physical or electronic form allowed by Title 29-A, section 1408 | An application confirmation is not a permit. |
| Supervisor's license | Yes | Valid credential | Supervisor rules are covered on the dedicated driving-rules page. |
| Vehicle registration | Yes | As allowed by Maine law | Keep current registration available. |
| Proof of insurance | Yes | As allowed by Maine law | Keep current proof available. |
What happens if my phone is dead when police ask for my permit? If the phone cannot display the electronic permit, you cannot produce that electronic version on demand. Carrying the physical permit as a backup avoids that practical problem.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
