Pass the 25-question knowledge test at 80%, and you walk out with a temporary paper permit while the plastic card is mailed within 10-20 business days.

Since no virtual learners permit exists, focus on passing the knowledge test to get the physical card. Once you have it, you'll need to complete supervised practice hours before your road test.

• The test has 25 questions. You need 20 correct (80%) to pass.
• Study the official CT Driver's Manual PDF and take practice tests.
• If under 18, have a signed Certificate of Parental Consent (Form 2D) ready. Your parent must complete the 2-hour Parent-Teen Safe Driving Class.
• Check the practice hours requirement to plan your supervised driving schedule ahead of time.

Schedule your knowledge test online for 8:30 AM at the Norwalk DMV to avoid the 3-hour afternoon waits common in summer. This prevents wasting an entire day.

Bring two forms of proof of residency (like a bank statement AND a utility bill) to your permit appointment, not just one. This prevents immediate rejection and rescheduling, which frequently happens at the Waterbury office. See the complete list of required documents before your appointment.
