Question 1

medium

Explain how climate change affects the water cycle. Illustrate with examples.

● Answer

Climate change - caused mainly by rising global temperatures due to excess greenhouse gases - disrupts and intensifies several stages of the water cycle:

1. Increased evaporation: A warmer atmosphere causes more water to evaporate from oceans, lakes, rivers, and soil. A warmer atmosphere can also hold more water vapour (roughly 7% more for every 1 °C rise in temperature), loading the atmosphere with extra moisture.

2. Heavier and more uneven precipitation: Extra atmospheric moisture leads to more intense rainfall in some regions. For example, India experiences more intense monsoon events due to the warmer Arabian Sea supplying more moisture. However, other regions see less rainfall and more droughts - making the water cycle more extreme and uneven.

3. Melting glaciers: Rising temperatures melt glaciers and polar ice caps. Himalayan glaciers that supply water to rivers like the Ganga and Brahmaputra will initially cause flooding but will eventually shrink, reducing long-term river flow and threatening millions who depend on these rivers. Globally, melting polar ice raises sea levels, threatening coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai.

4. Reduced groundwater recharge: Heavy bursts of rainfall cause rapid surface run-off rather than slow infiltration into the ground. This reduces groundwater recharge, making it harder to maintain water supply during dry months.

5. Soil erosion: Intense rainfall on deforested land washes away topsoil, reducing the land's ability to absorb water and further disrupting the local water cycle.

In summary, climate change makes the water cycle more extreme - wetter in some places, drier in others - and disrupts the balance between the cryosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere.

These long-answer questions focus on atomic structure and the relationship between electron transitions and spectral lines. A strong response should state the relevant principle, develop the explanation or derivation in a logical order, use correct symbols and units, and finish with a clear conclusion. Students should first prepare their own answer and then compare its structure, accuracy and completeness with the provided response. Regular practice with these questions develops the depth and presentation needed for descriptive school assessments, pre-board papers and board examinations.

Q1.

Explain how climate change affects the water cycle. Illustrate with examples.

Climate change - caused mainly by rising global temperatures due to excess greenhouse gases - disrupts and intensifies several stages of the water cycle:

Q2.

Describe how albedo affects the Earth's surface temperature and its climate.

Albedo is the fraction of solar radiation reflected by a surface (the word comes from Latin, meaning whiteness). It directly controls how much solar energy a surface absorbs versus reflects, and therefore affects the temperature of that surface and the climate of the region.

High albedo surfaces (reflect more, absorb less, stay cooler):

Snow: Albedo 0.80-0.90 - reflects 80-90% of sunlight, keeping polar regions very cold.
Ice: Albedo 0.50-0.70 - glaciers and sea ice stay cold because they reflect most incoming radiation.
Light coloured soil: Albedo 0.25-0.45 - cooler than dark soil under the same sunshine.

Low albedo surfaces (absorb more, reflect less, warm up faster):

Ocean water: Albedo 0.06-0.10 - absorbs most solar energy, warming tropical oceans significantly.
Black soil: Albedo 0.05-0.15 - heats up quickly, as seen in Deccan plateau soils.

Impact on climate:

Global temperature differences: Albedo differences between the equator (low albedo, warm oceans) and poles (high albedo, snow and ice) create temperature contrasts that drive planetary winds and ocean currents.
Ice-albedo feedback: When ice melts due to global warming, darker ocean or land is exposed. Darker surfaces have lower albedo and absorb more radiation, causing more warming and more melting - a self-reinforcing feedback loop that accelerates climate change.
Urban heat island effect: Cities have concrete roads, buildings, and asphalt surfaces with low albedo. They absorb more radiation and retain more heat than surrounding forests and farmland, making cities warmer - especially at night.

Q3.

How are mountain and valley breezes formed? Suppose there are two mountains, one covered with grass and another covered with barren rocks; would the temperature of the two mountain breezes be different? If so, how?

Formation of Valley Breeze (daytime):

During the day, the Sun heats mountain slopes more rapidly than the valley floor. The air over the warm slopes becomes lighter and rises, creating a low-pressure zone on the slopes. Cooler air from the valley floor moves upslope to replace the rising warm air. This flow is called the valley breeze.

Formation of Mountain Breeze (night-time):

After sunset, mountain slopes lose heat quickly by radiation and become cooler than the valley floor. The cooled, denser air on the slopes sinks down into the valley. This downslope flow is called the mountain breeze.

Would the two mountain breezes be different?

Yes. Consider one mountain covered with grass and another with barren rocks.

Feature	Grass-covered mountain	Barren rock mountain
Albedo	Higher (grass reflects more light)	Lower (dark rock absorbs more)
Heat absorption	Slower - grass and plant transpiration cool the surface	Faster - rock heats up quickly
Daytime valley breeze	Weaker and cooler (less heating)	Stronger and warmer (more heating)
Night-time mountain breeze	Gentler and less cold (grass retains some heat)	Stronger and colder (bare rock cools rapidly)

Conclusion: The grass-covered mountain produces milder, gentler breezes due to higher albedo and moisture from transpiration. The barren rock mountain produces stronger, more extreme breezes because bare rock heats and cools rapidly. Surface cover significantly affects local wind patterns through its effect on heat absorption and radiation.

Q4.

Explain the processes involved in the nitrogen cycle. How would life on Earth be affected if nitrogen were not cycled?

The nitrogen cycle moves nitrogen between the atmosphere, soil, water, and living organisms. Nitrogen is essential for making proteins and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) in all organisms. The atmosphere holds about 78% nitrogen gas (N₂), but it is rather non-reactive and cannot be used directly by most living things. The cycle involves these steps:

1. Nitrogen Fixation: Certain bacteria convert atmospheric N₂ into ammonia (NH₃), which plants can use. Rhizobium bacteria live in root nodules of legumes (peas, beans, lentils); Azotobacter bacteria fix nitrogen freely in the soil. Lightning also fixes small amounts of nitrogen into nitrogen oxides.

2. Nitrification: Ammonia in the soil is first converted to nitrite (NO₂^-) by Nitrosomonas bacteria, then to nitrate (NO₃^-) by Nitrobacter bacteria. Plants absorb nitrates from the soil through their roots.

3. Assimilation: Plants use absorbed nitrates to build proteins and nucleic acids. Animals obtain nitrogen by eating plants or other animals.

4. Ammonification: When plants and animals die or produce waste, decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break down the organic nitrogen compounds and return ammonia to the soil.

5. Denitrification: Denitrifying bacteria like Pseudomonas convert some nitrates back into N₂ gas, which returns to the atmosphere, completing the cycle.

If nitrogen were not cycled:

Soil would quickly become depleted of available nitrates.
Plants could not synthesise proteins, chlorophyll, or nucleic acids, and would die.
Animals that depend on plants for protein would also perish.
The entire biosphere would collapse, since nitrogen is the building block of all proteins and genetic material in living organisms.

Q5.

What are the impacts of deforestation on the Earth's oxygen and carbon cycles? What are the other consequences of deforestation?

Impact of deforestation on the oxygen cycle:

Trees are major producers of atmospheric oxygen through photosynthesis (they absorb CO₂ and release O₂).
When forests are cleared, total photosynthesis decreases - less O₂ is produced and CO₂ accumulates in the atmosphere.
Burning forests directly consumes oxygen and releases large amounts of CO₂.
Reduced transpiration from trees lowers moisture in the air, affecting cloud formation and local rainfall.

Impact of deforestation on the carbon cycle:

Living trees store large amounts of carbon in their wood, leaves, and roots. When they are felled and burned, this stored carbon is released as CO₂.
Deforested land can no longer act as a carbon sink - it loses its ability to absorb CO₂, accelerating the buildup of greenhouse gases and intensifying the greenhouse effect.
Slow decomposition of dead roots and wood continues to release CO₂ and methane for years after clearing.

Other consequences of deforestation:

Soil erosion: Without tree roots binding the soil, heavy rains wash away topsoil, reducing fertility and causing landslides.
Loss of biodiversity: Forests are habitats for countless species. Destruction of habitat drives plants, animals, and insects toward extinction.
Disrupted water cycle: Reduced transpiration lowers local humidity and rainfall, making previously forested areas more prone to drought.
Changed albedo: Removal of dark forest canopy can alter the reflectivity of the surface, affecting local heat absorption and air circulation.
Eutrophication: Increased run-off from bare land carries nitrates into rivers and lakes, causing algal blooms that deplete oxygen and kill aquatic life.

Q6.

Explain with a suitable diagram the path that carbon takes to go back to the atmosphere. You may start from plants using CO₂ from the atmosphere.

The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves continuously between the atmosphere, living organisms, the geosphere (rocks, soil, fossil fuels), and the hydrosphere (oceans).

Path of carbon starting from plants:

Photosynthesis (Atmosphere → Plants): Plants absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and use sunlight, water, and chlorophyll to convert it into glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆). Carbon enters the biosphere here.
Respiration (Plants → Atmosphere): Plants break down some glucose for energy, releasing CO₂ back into the atmosphere.
Consumption (Plants → Animals): Animals eat plants and obtain carbon in organic compounds. They also return CO₂ to the atmosphere through respiration.
Decomposition (Dead organisms → Soil and Atmosphere): When plants and animals die, decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break down organic matter. CO₂ is released into the atmosphere and some carbon returns to the soil.
Fossil fuel formation (Slow cycle, millions of years): Dead organisms buried under pressure over millions of years form coal, oil, and natural gas - locking carbon in the geosphere.
Combustion (Fossil fuels → Atmosphere): Burning fossil fuels releases this stored carbon as CO₂ rapidly - in decades, not millions of years.
Ocean exchange: Oceans absorb atmospheric CO₂. Phytoplankton use it for photosynthesis; marine organisms form carbonate shells. When they die and sink, carbon is stored on the ocean floor for long periods.

Q7.

Why is an excess of CO₂ in the atmosphere considered undesirable even though it is required by plants?

CO₂ is essential for plants - they use it during photosynthesis to produce glucose, which is the foundation of all food in the biosphere. However, excess CO₂ is harmful for several reasons:

1. Enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming:

CO₂ is a greenhouse gas - it traps outgoing infrared heat from the Earth's surface. A natural level of CO₂ keeps the Earth warm enough for life. But excess CO₂ traps too much heat, raising global temperatures beyond what ecosystems and human societies are adapted to - causing global warming and climate change.

2. Melting ice and rising sea levels:

Higher temperatures melt glaciers and polar ice, raising sea levels and threatening coastal cities and low-lying regions.

3. Ocean acidification:

Excess CO₂ dissolves into the ocean, making seawater more acidic. This harms corals, shellfish, and plankton - disrupting marine food chains.

4. Extreme weather:

Higher global temperatures intensify the water cycle, causing more severe storms, droughts, and floods.

Why plants cannot simply absorb all the extra CO₂:

Humans release CO₂ through burning fossil fuels and deforestation far faster than forests and oceans can absorb it. At the same time, deforestation is reducing the Earth's carbon-absorbing capacity. Atmospheric CO₂ has risen by about 35% since 1960 - far faster than natural systems can compensate.

Q8.

If the Earth were a flat disc instead of a sphere, how would the patterns of solar radiation and temperature be different?

The Earth's spherical shape causes solar radiation to be distributed unevenly across its surface, creating temperature differences that drive global climate. Here is what would change on a flat disc Earth:

On a spherical Earth (actual):

The Sun's rays hit the equator nearly perpendicularly (concentrated over a small area) but hit polar regions at a very shallow angle (spread over a much larger area). This makes equatorial regions warm and polar regions cold - a gradient that drives global winds and ocean currents.

On a flat disc Earth:

Uniform sunlight angle: If the disc faced the Sun directly, sunlight would fall at nearly the same angle over the entire surface. There would be no equator-to-pole temperature gradient.
No temperature-driven winds or currents: Without a temperature difference between the "centre" and "edges" of the disc, the global wind belts (trade winds, westerlies) and ocean currents driven by this gradient would not form.
No seasons: Earth's seasons arise from the tilt of its spherical axis as it revolves around the Sun. A flat disc would experience seasons very differently - possibly only its edges would receive significantly angled light.
Uniform temperature: Most of the disc's surface would receive similar amounts of solar energy, resulting in a more uniform temperature across the surface.
Different day-night cycle: On a disc, the day-night cycle would be very different from a sphere - the underside would always be night, and all of the top surface would receive sunlight simultaneously.

Conclusion: The Earth's spherical shape is directly responsible for uneven heating, which creates the temperature gradients that drive all major weather and climate systems. Without it, the Earth's climate would be far more uniform and far simpler.

Q9.

Suppose there is a rise in atmospheric temperature on Earth. How would this affect the cryosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere?

A rise in atmospheric temperature triggers a chain of changes across the Earth's interconnected spheres:

Cryosphere (ice and snow):

Glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice melt at an accelerated rate. Himalayan glaciers that supply water to India's major rivers (Ganga, Brahmaputra) would shrink.
Arctic and Antarctic ice caps reduce in area; mountain snow cover decreases.
As ice melts, darker ocean or land is exposed. These darker surfaces absorb more radiation, causing further warming - the ice-albedo feedback loop.

Hydrosphere (water bodies):

Melting ice raises sea levels, threatening coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
Rivers initially swell from glacial meltwater, causing flooding; long-term, rivers will carry less water as glaciers shrink.
The water cycle intensifies - warmer air holds more moisture, bringing heavier monsoon rains in some areas and greater drought in others.
Warmer oceans absorb less CO₂; increased ocean acidification harms marine organisms.

Biosphere (living organisms):

Many species can only survive within specific temperature ranges. Rising temperatures force them to migrate to cooler regions or higher altitudes - or face extinction if they cannot adapt.
Coral reefs face bleaching and collapse due to warmer, more acidic ocean water.
Crop-growing regions shift; some traditional agricultural areas may no longer be suitable for their current crops, threatening food security.
Pest and disease ranges expand as warmer temperatures allow mosquitoes and other disease vectors to thrive in new areas.

Q10.

Explain how the Earth's atmosphere helps in maintaining a suitable temperature for life to survive on the Earth.

The Earth's atmosphere maintains a suitable temperature for life through two main mechanisms:

1. Filtering harmful incoming radiation:

The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun, protecting living organisms from DNA damage and skin cancer.
Clouds and atmospheric particles also scatter and reflect some solar radiation back into space, preventing excessive surface heating.

2. The greenhouse effect - trapping outgoing heat:

The Earth's surface absorbs solar radiation and re-radiates it as infrared (heat) radiation toward space.
Greenhouse gases - mainly CO₂, CH₄, and water vapour - absorb this outgoing infrared radiation and re-emit part of it back toward the Earth's surface.
This trapping of heat is called the greenhouse effect. Without it, the average Earth surface temperature would be about -18 °C - far too cold for liquid water and most life forms.
With the natural greenhouse effect, the average surface temperature is about 15 °C - warm enough to sustain liquid oceans and a diverse biosphere.

Comparison with other planets (for context):

Venus has a thick CO₂ atmosphere, causing an uncontrolled greenhouse effect - surface temperature reaches about 460 °C.
Mercury has no significant atmosphere - temperatures swing wildly from very hot (day) to very cold (night) with no greenhouse warming.

Additional role - reducing temperature extremes:

The atmosphere acts as a blanket, reducing the difference between daytime and night-time temperatures. Without it, temperatures would swing as extremely as they do on the Moon.

Q11.

Describe the interrelationship between different spheres of the Earth. Illustrate with example how these spheres function in a delicate balance.

The Earth consists of five interacting spheres: geosphere (solid rocks, soil, landforms), hydrosphere (oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater), cryosphere (ice, glaciers, snow), atmosphere (surrounding air), and biosphere (all living organisms and their habitats). These spheres continuously exchange matter and energy, forming one integrated Earth system.

How the spheres are interrelated:

Geosphere-Hydrosphere: Rivers erode rocks, dissolve minerals, and carry them to the ocean. Dissolved minerals nourish aquatic life. Water shapes landforms through erosion and deposition.
Hydrosphere-Atmosphere: Water evaporates from oceans and lakes into the atmosphere, forming clouds and returning as rain (the water cycle). Oceans absorb and moderate atmospheric temperature.
Atmosphere-Biosphere: Plants absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere and release O₂ through photosynthesis. Animals and decomposers return CO₂ through respiration and decomposition. The atmosphere supplies the gases (O₂, CO₂, N₂) that living organisms need.
Cryosphere-Hydrosphere: Glacier and snow melt supply fresh water to rivers and oceans. Changes in the cryosphere directly affect sea levels and river flow.
Biosphere-Geosphere: Plant roots hold soil together and prevent erosion. Decomposing organic matter enriches soil. Human activities (mining, farming, construction) alter the geosphere, which affects all other spheres.

Example - The Himalayan system illustrating the delicate balance:

Himalayan glaciers (cryosphere) melt seasonally to supply the Ganga-Brahmaputra river system (hydrosphere). This water supports agriculture across vast plains (biosphere), shapes river valleys (geosphere), and drives the monsoon through evaporation (atmosphere). If global warming (atmosphere disturbed) accelerates glacier melt, rivers initially flood but eventually shrink, reducing water supply for agriculture, degrading soil, and threatening the livelihoods of millions. A disturbance in one sphere cascades through all others.

Conclusion: The five spheres maintain a delicate balance through the continuous exchange of matter and energy. Human activities that disrupt any sphere can trigger changes across all others, threatening the balance that sustains life on Earth.

Q12.

The Journey Beyond

Consider two hypothetical Earth-sized planets that have an atmosphere. Assume that one planet is entirely covered by oceans and the other is entirely by land. Knowing that the Sun heats the equator more than the poles, how would the wind patterns on these planets compare with the wind systems we observe on Earth, with its combination of land and sea?

This thought experiment explores how surface composition affects wind patterns through differences in heat absorption.

Key principle: Wind is driven by temperature differences. Land heats up and cools down much faster than water (water has a higher specific heat capacity). On Earth, this land-ocean contrast creates local winds (sea breezes, monsoons) on top of the global planetary wind belts.

Planet 1: Entirely covered by ocean

Water heats and cools slowly and uniformly. Temperature differences between day and night and between seasons would be much smaller than on Earth.
The equator-to-pole gradient would still exist (more sunlight near the equator than the poles), so planetary wind belts similar to Earth's trade winds and westerlies would still form - but they would be smoother, more symmetrical, and uninterrupted by continents.
No land-sea contrast means no monsoons, no land breezes, no sea breezes. Ocean currents would circulate more evenly without continental barriers.
Climate would be more stable and moderate overall.

Planet 2: Entirely covered by land

Land heats and cools rapidly. The equatorial region would become extremely hot during the day and cold at night; polar regions would be bitterly cold.
The temperature gradient between the equator and poles would be steeper than on Earth, driving very strong planetary winds.
No ocean to supply moisture means little rainfall - most of the surface would be desert-like. Large dust storms would be common.
Seasonal extremes would be far greater than on Earth.

Comparison with Earth:

Earth's combination of land and ocean creates both the global planetary wind belts AND regional systems like the Indian monsoon. Ocean currents also redistribute heat, moderating the global climate. Neither an all-ocean nor an all-land planet would show this complexity. The all-ocean planet would be milder and more uniform; the all-land planet would be harsher and more extreme.

Q13.

Explain the processes involved in the nitrogen cycle. How would life on Earth be affected if nitrogen were not cycled?

3. Assimilation: Plants use absorbed nitrates to build proteins and nucleic acids. Animals obtain nitrogen by eating plants or other animals.

Animals that depend on plants for protein would also perish.
The entire biosphere would collapse, since nitrogen is the building block of all proteins and genetic material in living organisms.

The Journey Beyond

Choose any one meal you ate recently (it could be anything, for example, roti and dal, rice and sambar, idli and chutney, and so on). For each main item in the meal, find out and explain: (i) how the carbon in it originally came from carbon dioxide in the air through photosynthesis, and (ii) how the nitrogen in it likely came from the atmosphere into the soil (for example, by bacteria or through the Haber-Bosch process and fertilisers) and then into the plant. Further, list other human activities involved in producing or cooking this meal that add extra carbon dioxide or nitrogen to the environment.

Worked example using: Roti and Dal

Part 1 - How carbon entered the food through photosynthesis

Roti (from wheat): Wheat plants absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere through stomata in their leaves. Using sunlight, water, and chlorophyll, they convert CO₂ into glucose through photosynthesis: CO₂ + H₂O + sunlight → glucose + O₂. The glucose is stored as starch in the wheat grain. The carbon in the roti originally came from atmospheric CO₂.

Dal (from lentils): Lentil plants similarly absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis and build carbon-rich proteins in their seeds. All carbon in the dal - in proteins, fats, and carbohydrates - originally came from atmospheric CO₂.

Part 2 - How nitrogen entered the food

Wheat: Atmospheric nitrogen (N₂) is fixed into ammonia by Azotobacter bacteria in the soil and also through lightning. In modern farming, the Haber-Bosch process converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which is used to make fertilisers (urea, ammonium nitrate). Wheat roots absorb nitrates from the soil and use them to make proteins stored in the grain.

Lentils: Lentils are legumes. Rhizobium bacteria in their root nodules fix atmospheric nitrogen directly into the soil as nitrates. The lentil plant assimilates these nitrates into protein-rich seeds - making dal a naturally nitrogen-rich food with less dependence on chemical fertilisers.

Part 3 - Human activities that add extra CO₂ or nitrogen to the environment

Cooking fuel: Burning LPG or wood to cook roti and dal releases CO₂.
Transport: Trucks carrying wheat and lentils from farms to cities burn diesel and release CO₂.
Fertiliser production: The Haber-Bosch process is energy-intensive and releases CO₂.
Fertiliser overuse: Excess nitrate fertilisers run off into rivers and lakes (eutrophication), and release nitrous oxide (N₂O) - a potent greenhouse gas - from the soil.
Food packaging: Plastic packaging requires fossil fuel energy to produce and contributes to CO₂ emissions.

Pause and Ponder - Question 5

What would happen to plants and animals on Earth if the biogeochemical cycles were disrupted and stopped? Explain by giving a few examples.

Biogeochemical cycles continuously move essential nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and water between living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) parts of the Earth. If these cycles were disrupted and stopped, life could not continue. Here is what would happen:

Water cycle disrupted:

Without evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, rivers and lakes would dry up. Plants would die from lack of water, and animals would lose their freshwater source. All life processes - photosynthesis, digestion, respiration - depend on water.

Carbon cycle disrupted:

Plants use CO₂ for photosynthesis. If the carbon cycle stopped and CO₂ was not recycled, plants could not make food. All animals that depend on plants would starve. If decomposition stopped, dead organic matter would accumulate and nutrients would not return to the soil, halting new plant growth.

Nitrogen cycle disrupted:

Nitrogen is essential for proteins and nucleic acids. Plants absorb nitrates from the soil. If nitrogen-fixing bacteria stopped working, soil would become nitrogen-deficient, crops would fail, and all animals dependent on plants for protein would die.

Oxygen cycle disrupted:

Plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis. Without it, atmospheric oxygen would be consumed by respiration and combustion. Most animals and aerobic microorganisms would suffocate. Even decomposers need oxygen to break down dead matter.

Overall consequence: Without biogeochemical cycles, nutrients would not be recycled, energy would not flow through ecosystems, and the conditions for life would disappear. The Earth would become a lifeless planet.

Pause and Ponder - Question 6

Discuss how human activities increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. What would you do as an individual to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas?

How human activities increase greenhouse gas concentrations:

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CO₂, methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) trap outgoing infrared heat from the Earth's surface. Human activities have raised their concentrations well above natural levels:

Burning fossil fuels: Coal, oil, and natural gas burned for electricity, transport, and industry release large amounts of CO₂. Atmospheric CO₂ has risen by about 35% since 1960 (from 315 ppm to over 420 ppm).
Deforestation: Forests absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis. When cleared and burned, stored carbon is released as CO₂ and future absorption is also lost.
Agriculture: Flooded rice paddies and livestock digestion produce methane; overuse of fertilisers releases nitrous oxide from soil.
Industrial processes: Cement manufacturing, chemical plants, and steel production release CO₂ and other GHGs.
Waste: Organic waste in landfills decomposes without oxygen to produce methane.

What an individual can do:

Transport: Use public transport, cycle, or walk; prefer electric vehicles where possible.
Energy: Use LED lights and energy-efficient appliances; switch off devices not in use; use solar energy.
Waste: Reduce, reuse, and recycle to minimise landfill waste.
Food: Reduce meat consumption, especially beef, and avoid burning crop residue.
Green cover: Plant trees to increase local carbon absorption.
Water: Conserve water - pumping and treating water requires energy.

India's Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) encourages people to adopt such eco-friendly habits to collectively reduce GHG emissions.
