Car and motorcycle driving privileges have separate skills requirements. Use the dedicated road-test guide for Class C vehicle requirements and testing details, and the motorcycle licensing guidance for the motorcycle skills path.

Examples of Moving From Motorcycle to Car Privileges

Here is what Wyoming WYDOT requires for motorcycle to car licensing examples.

Adding a Car License: A Jackson resident with a motorcycle license wants to drive a truck. They must get a Class C instruction permit, practice, and pass the car driving test to add the Class C privilege to their existing license.
Starting from Scratch: A 17-year-old in Rock Springs with no license can apply for both a Class C and Class M instruction permit simultaneously, studying for two written tests, to begin practicing for both car and motorcycle licenses.
Experienced Rider, New Driver: An adult in Sheridan who has ridden motorcycles for years but never driven a car must still start with a Class C instruction permit and complete all supervised driving requirements before the skills test; their motorcycle experience does not shorten the process.

Wyoming Permit Processing Time: Same-Day Issuance, Mailed Cards and Delivery Delays (2026)

Getting a Wyoming Instruction Permit involves a same-day office visit and a mail delivery. The total process from preparation to receiving the plastic card takes about 2 to 4 weeks.

Overall Wyoming Instruction Permit Timeline

The complete instruction permit process has two phases: an in-person appointment and mail delivery.

Preparation (1-2 Days): Study the manual and gather required documents.
WYDOT Office Visit (1-2 Hours): Complete application, testing, and receive a temporary paper permit.
Mail Delivery (10-20 Business Days): Receive the permanent plastic permit card.

Appointment Duration and Same-Day Issuance

Do I get my Instruction Permit the same day in Wyoming? Yes. A WYDOT Driver Services appointment for an instruction permit takes 45 to 90 minutes, and you receive a temporary paper permit the same day after completing the required steps and passing. The permanent card is mailed later.

WYDOT Office Time Breakdown

Step	Estimated Time	Details
Check-in & Document Screening	5-10 Minutes	Required documents are reviewed.
Vision Screening	3-5 Minutes	Complete the required vision screening.
Wait for Testing Computer	10-30 Minutes	Wait time depends on station traffic.
Knowledge Exam	20-30 Minutes	Complete the permit knowledge test.
Photo, Payment & Issuance	10 Minutes	Pay the $45 permit fee, take the photo, and receive the temporary paper permit.

Visit the Wyoming learner's permit guide for the full application requirements.

Realistic Timeline Expectations vs. Reality

Office traffic: Busy periods can make the in-person visit longer than the basic processing time.
Failed knowledge test: A retake can add another visit; see the dedicated failed-and-retakes guide for those rules.
Mail delivery: The plastic card can take longer than the typical delivery window, especially if there is a production or mailing delay.

Factors That Delay Your Permit Issuance
