Wisconsin Permit Next Steps: Practice, Eligibility, Road Test, and Probationary License

After getting your Wisconsin instruction permit, the next steps depend on your age. If you are under 18, you must hold the permit for at least 6 months, be violation-free for the 6 months before applying for a probationary license, complete driver education, and certify 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night. If you are 18 or older, the minimum permit-holding period before the road test is 7 days and the 50-hour requirement does not apply.

What Are Wisconsin's Permit Rules and Practice Requirements Before the Road Test?

Every instruction-permit holder must drive with a qualified accompanying driver and follow the permit restrictions. For the full age, relationship, license and nighttime-supervision rules, use the dedicated Wisconsin supervisor and driving-rules guides.

What Are the Next Steps After a Wisconsin Permit If You Are Already 18?

If you are 18 or older, the teen six-month holding period, driver-education requirement, and 50-hour practice requirement do not apply. Keep practicing with a qualified accompanying driver, hold the instruction permit for at least 7 days before the road test, then schedule and pass the Class D skills test. If you pass, the next licensing step is the probationary Class D license.

Under-18 Driver Training and Practice Hours

If you are under 18, you must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours during darkness. The HS-303 supervised driving log is a convenient way to track those hours, but the sponsor certifies completion on Form MV3001 rather than submitting HS-303 as a required road-test document.

For how to distribute and document the required practice hours, use the dedicated Wisconsin practice-hours guide.

Preparing for the Wisconsin DMV Road Test

If you are under 18, road-test eligibility includes being at least 16, holding the permit at least 6 months, meeting the separate six-month violation-free requirement, completing driver education, and completing the required practice hours. Adults 18 and older follow the 7-day permit-holding rule instead. Study the Wisconsin Driver Handbook before your appointment.

1. Schedule early: Appointments open 11 weeks ahead on the Wisconsin DMV scheduler. Slots fill within days during peak times.
2. Know the fees: The Probationary License costs $28 when you pass. A missed appointment or re-test costs $15.
3. Check your vehicle: Make sure the test vehicle meets Wisconsin registration and safety requirements. Use the dedicated road-test vehicle requirements guide for the full checklist.

For applicants under 18, make sure the sponsor certification on the current MV3001 is complete. HS-303 can be used to track practice hours, but it is not the document used to certify the 50-hour requirement to DMV.

Check the test vehicle before the appointment and use the dedicated vehicle-requirements guide for the full inspection details.

What Happens Immediately After You Pass the Wisconsin Road Test?

Passing the road test is not the same as having the probationary license issued. DMV records the passing result, and you must complete the licensing transaction and pay the applicable probationary-license fee before the new license is issued. If the test is completed when the service center is closed, follow DMV instructions for completing the licensing step afterward.

What If Your Wisconsin Permit Expires Before the Road Test?

Your permit stays valid for 18 months. You cannot practice-drive on an expired permit. However, Wisconsin allows one Class D road test with an instruction permit that has been expired for less than one year; you cannot drive yourself to that test on the expired permit. Renew the permit if you need additional practice or if the expiration is one year or more.

One Racine applicant's Metra train was delayed at the state border: Dad arrived 13 minutes late. The supervisor noted the documented delay and squeezed them into a cancellation slot an hour later; done same day. Document transit delays; Racine DMV supervisors sometimes accommodate with proof.

For drivers under 18, use the six-month permit period to build the required supervised practice steadily instead of leaving the hours until the end.
