One Kenosha applicant's permit arrived with a wrong expiry date: a printing error on the card. An in-person reissue was filed; the corrected card arrived in 12 days. Don't drive on a permit with an incorrect expiry date: file for reissue before getting behind the wheel.

What If Your Temporary Wisconsin Permit Expires Before the Plastic Card Arrives?

The DMV paper receipt is valid for 45 days, while the permanent card normally arrives within 10 business days. If the card has not arrived after the normal mailing window, use the status checker and contact DMV rather than waiting for the receipt to expire. See Wisconsin DMV card-mailing information.

Wisconsin Permit Processing Delays and How to Prevent Them

A few simple steps can save you hours. Don't learn the hard way.

Bring printed, original residency proofs. Screenshots on phones get rejected: this adds 30+ minutes as staff cannot accept digital images.
Complete the knowledge test online before your visit if you're 15 to 17. This bypasses the in-person testing queue, which is often the longest wait at any DMV.
Triple-check that all documents match your current legal name and address exactly. Mismatches flag your application for manual review, adding 5+ business days to mail delivery time.

Bring more documentation than you think you need. The DMV can reject documents for minor issues like address formatting differences or expired dates. Having backups means you won't leave empty-handed.

Can Wisconsin DMV issue another temporary permit if your card is delayed in the mail? WisDOT does not promise an automatic second temporary receipt for a mailing delay. If more than 10 days have passed without the card, DMV says to check the print status and contact the Driver Eligibility Unit. Do that before the 45-day receipt expires.
