If you fail the West Virginia permit knowledge test because of wrong answers, you must wait 7 days before another attempt. There is no same-day retry. After the waiting period, you may use an available in-person DMV testing option or the online KnowTo Drive test; a new in-office appointment is not universally required.
The West Virginia knowledge test has 25 questions and requires 19 correct answers to pass. If you fail because of your answers, you must wait at least one week before another written-test attempt.
An 18-out-of-25 score is 72% and is one question short of the 19-out-of-25 passing standard. For the full test format and passing-score explanation, use the dedicated Permit Test Format and Passing Score pages.
West Virginia law does not state one lifetime maximum number of ordinary knowledge-test failures. Instead, it limits the written-test attempts covered by an application fee and requires at least one week between failed written tests.
West Virginia law does not create a special two-failure or three-failure lockout for an ordinary wrong-answer failure. After each failed written test, you must wait at least one week before another attempt. If the attempts covered by the applicable application fee have been used, confirm the next application or payment step with WV DMV before retesting.
The official statutes reviewed do not state a lifetime maximum number of ordinary failed knowledge-test attempts. They regulate the attempts covered by an application fee and the minimum waiting period between failures. Confirmed online-testing fraud is different because it can suspend testing privileges.
Yes. WV DMV states that applicants who fail the online knowledge test because of knowledge must wait 7 days before attempting another knowledge test.
Once the 7-day waiting period has passed, choose an available testing method and follow the requirements for that transaction. You do not automatically have to start over with a new in-office appointment.
Detailed appointment procedures belong on the Appointments & SOS page, while payment methods and fee breakdowns belong on the Fees & Costs pages.
A new appointment is not universally required. After the 7-day wait, online testing remains available for eligible applicants, and DMV office procedures can include walk-in service as well as appointments. Check the office you plan to use before traveling.
Do not assume one answer applies to every applicant. West Virginia's attempt and fee provisions differ by licensing path, so verify whether your next attempt is already covered or requires another payment before you retest.
Use the waiting period to focus on the rules or signs you missed. Study from the current West Virginia Driver's Handbook and use WV-specific practice questions to check whether those weak areas have improved. Practice with Shoro AI's West Virginia permit prep before the real test to prepare better and give yourself a stronger chance of passing on the first attempt—or avoiding another retake.
A normal knowledge-test failure and a fraud-related online-test failure are not the same. A wrong-answer failure uses the standard 7-day wait. Confirmed online testing fraud can lead to a testing suspension of at least 90 days and a $50 reinstatement fee before testing privileges are restored.
If the online system stops a test because it detects possible outside assistance, the result can be treated differently from an ordinary knowledge failure. If a DMV investigation confirms fraud, testing privileges can be suspended for at least 90 days and a $50 reinstatement fee is required before testing again.
For an ordinary knowledge-test failure based on wrong answers, the current WV rules reviewed here provide for the one-week wait and another test attempt rather than a separate score-appeal process. A fraud-based suspension is different: under West Virginia Code §17B-3-12, DMV must send written notice at least 20 days before the suspension takes effect. Within 10 days after receiving that notice, the person may request a hearing and a stay of the suspension by certified mail. If the suspension is affirmed after the hearing, judicial review is available under Chapter 29A.
For an ordinary knowledge failure, you may retake the test online after the required 7-day wait if you meet the online testing requirements. A passing online score is valid for 6 months from the completion date. For detailed study strategy, use the current West Virginia Driver's Handbook and West Virginia practice tests.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
