After Getting a Washington Permit: Practice Hours, Waiting Period, and Road Test

Getting your Washington instruction permit is just the beginning: Washington permit next steps mean logging hours, finishing TSE, and booking your road test. Now comes the real work: logging hours, building skills, and passing that road test. Here's exactly what happens next.

How Many Practice Hours Does Washington DOL Require After Getting a Permit?

Washington teens need 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, before receiving an intermediate license. Those hours are not a blanket prerequisite for taking the skills test. See the full breakdown of Washington required practice hours.

The 50 hours break down into two categories:

• 40 hours of daytime driving
• 10 hours of nighttime driving after sunset

A driving log is useful for tracking progress, but Washington requires certification of the required practice hours for the intermediate-license step rather than submission of a signed entry for every drive.

If you are under 18, you must hold the instruction permit for at least 6 months before receiving an intermediate license. This is separate from eligibility to take the skills test.

Traffic Safety Education Requirements

Teens under 18 must enroll in Traffic Safety Education (TSE). This isn't optional: it's state law.

1. Complete 30 classroom instruction hours
2. Finish at least 6 behind-the-wheel training hours with a certified instructor
3. Submit parental consent through the TSE provider

Most high schools offer TSE. Private driving schools charge $400-$600 depending on your area. Find approved TSE providers near you through the DOL directory.

Parents must sign a consent form before TSE enrollment begins. Get this from your TSE provider or download it directly from the DOL TSE page.

What Driving Rules Apply While You Practice With a Washington Permit?

Washington permit restrictions exist for safety reasons. A violation can affect the clean-record requirement for a teen intermediate license, but it does not reset the six-month permit-holding period.

• A licensed driver with 5+ years of experience must sit in the front passenger seat at all times
• Cell phone or other mobile-device use while driving is prohibited for permit holders, including hands-free use, except when calling 911.
• Passenger limits and nighttime curfews apply once you get your intermediate license, so start preparing now

The supervising driver requirements are strict. Your supervisor cannot be intoxicated or have any license suspensions. More details on behind-the-wheel training explain what instructors cover versus what parents teach.

What Practice Schedule Works Best for Washington Permit Holders?

Spread your 50 hours across different conditions. Cramming doesn't build real driving skills: trust me on this one.

Washington weather is unpredictable. Get some rainy-day practice before your test: examiners don't cancel for drizzle.

What Skills Does the Washington Driving Test Evaluate?

The skills test checks whether you can safely control the vehicle and follow Washington driving rules. Practice core maneuvers and everyday traffic decisions; detailed scoring and test-day requirements belong in the dedicated road-test pages.

What Documents Do You Need for the Washington DOL Road Test?

Bring the permit or other accepted authorization and the vehicle/insurance documents required by your testing location. The 50-hour certification and 6-month permit period relate to intermediate-license eligibility, not a universal road-test document checklist. See the dedicated road-test documents guide for the full test-day list.

How Do You Schedule the Washington Driving Test?

Schedule your road test through a private driving school or select DOL locations. Pre-apply online through the License eXpress portal to manage your application.

After You Pass the Washington Driving Test

Your passing skills-test result is reported to DOL, but passing the test does not by itself issue the license. You still need to complete the license application step and meet the age-specific requirements that apply to you.

Validity of a Washington Driving-Test Passing Score

A Washington skills-test result can be used to obtain a driver license for up to 1 year from the test date. If it expires before you finish the licensing process, you may need to take the skills test again.

Can a Washington Teen Get a First License Online After Passing the Tests?

Some eligible 16- and 17-year-olds can apply for their first license online after the required training, tests, permit period, practice hours, and record requirements are complete and DOL has the needed records. If the online option is not available for your record, follow the DOL instructions for an office transaction.

What Changes on November 1, 2026 for First-Time Drivers Under 25?

Starting November 1, 2026, first-time Washington driver-license applicants under 25 must also pass the free online Work Zone and First Responder course before getting their license. This is a separate requirement from the knowledge test, skills test, and any driver education that applies to your age.

Driving-Test and First-License Costs

Skills-test fees vary by testing location. A new Washington driver license uses the current DOL application and per-year issuance fee structure, so do not rely on a fixed $55 test fee or $89 first-license total.
