You take the Virginia learner's permit knowledge test at an official DMV Customer Service Center (CSC) or an approved partner site. The test uses a proctored computer. You cannot take the official exam online from home.

Where to Take the Virginia Learner's Permit Knowledge Test

The Virginia learner's permit knowledge exam can be taken at a DMV customer service center or in a classroom at a participating high school. DMV Connect events may also offer passenger-vehicle knowledge testing when that service is specifically listed for the event. DMV Select offices do not provide the standard knowledge exam.

Location	Knowledge Testing
DMV Customer Service Center	Yes
Participating High School	Yes, through DMV's remote testing program
DMV Connect	Only when knowledge testing is listed for that event
DMV Select	No

For walk-in knowledge testing at a customer service center, be present by 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or 11:30 a.m. Saturday to test that day.

Virginia Permit Testing at Schools and DMV Connect Events

Virginia's school remote-testing program lets participating students take the DMV knowledge exam in a proctored school setting. Students who pass receive a testing receipt and then complete permit processing with DMV.

DMV Connect is another possible option only when the event's service list specifically includes passenger-vehicle knowledge testing. Check the event before traveling.

Do Students Get Their Virginia Permit Immediately After Passing the Knowledge Test at School?

No. A student who passes through Virginia's school remote-testing program receives a testing receipt, then takes that receipt to a DMV Customer Service Center to complete the learner's permit process.

Virginia School Knowledge-Test Result Timing

Yes. Virginia's school remote-testing program gives students their test results immediately. Passing the test does not by itself issue the learner's permit; DMV still completes the credential process.

Computer Testing Rules at Virginia DMV Sites

At DMV customer service centers, the standard knowledge exam is taken on a DMV testing system rather than a personal device. Part 1 has 10 road-sign questions and requires 10/10. Part 2 has 30 general-knowledge questions and requires at least 24 correct.

Oral exams are available by request at DMV customer service centers. For detailed scoring, fees, and retake rules, use the dedicated Permit Test Format, Passing Score, Permit Cost & Fees, and Failed Knowledge Test pages.

How to Find Virginia Permit Testing Centers and Avoid Failures

Use the Virginia DMV location finder for customer service centers and the DMV remote-testing page for participating schools. For DMV Connect, confirm that the specific event lists knowledge testing before you travel.
