Part one of the Virginia permit exam tests sign identification only. You must correctly identify all 10 road signs to pass this section one wrong answer fails it entirely.
Virginia's permit test includes exactly 10 road-sign questions in Part 1. You must answer all 10 correctly. A single wrong answer ends Part 1 and the attempt before you reach the 30-question general-knowledge section.
Part 2 requires at least 24 correct answers out of 30, so up to 6 general-knowledge questions may be missed while still passing Part 2.
Virginia's sign questions test regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs, and work zone signs. Expect questions on stop, yield, no-entry, speed limit, railroad crossing, merge, school zone, and construction warning signs. Shape and color are tested as much as text recognition.
A question might show a yellow diamond with a sideways 'T.' You must know it means a side road enters the highway ahead, not just a generic 'junction' warning.
You may see a pentagon-shaped sign. The correct answer is 'School Zone' or 'School Crossing', not just 'warning.' Shape matters here.
A rectangular orange sign with a worker and shovel symbol means 'Road work ahead.' Selecting the broader 'Construction zone' fails if the specific wording isn't memorized. This is the kind of detail that trips people up.
The sign section is a hard gate: one wrong answer fails the test. Most applicants who fail the Virginia knowledge test fail specifically on Part 1. The general knowledge section allows five errors before failure. The sign section allows zero. Study signs first and last.
After three knowledge test fails, you must complete classroom driver education or an 8-hour driver's manual course. See Virginia DMV's three-exam failures page for requirements. Get your certificate before your fourth try.
For this page, the most important preparation is sign recognition. Study the official Virginia Driver's Manual sign charts by shape, color, symbol, and meaning until you can identify each sign without relying on the label.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
