Virginia Permit Practice Hours: 45-Hour Rule and Log Pitfalls

Drivers under 18 must complete 45 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours after sunset, and log them on the CSMA 19 form. Adults 18+ with no prior license must hold a permit for 60 days minimum, or complete state-approved driver education.

How Many Practice Hours Are Required by Age in Virginia?

Drivers under 18 must log at least 45 hours of supervised driving, including a minimum of 15 hours after sunset, before taking the road test. Adults 18 and older have no required hour minimums, but the DMV recommends at least 30 hours of practice.

• Under 18: You need 45 total hours of supervised driving. 15 of those hours must be after sunset. Hold your learner's permit for at least nine months before getting a driver's license.
• Age 18 or older: No state-mandated minimum for practice hours. Hold your permit 60 days minimum, or complete state-approved driver education to waive the waiting period.

Logging Virginia Permit Driving Hours Correctly

Teen drivers must document their 45 hours using the official In-Car Maneuvers Observation Record (CSMA 19) or the RoadReady app. Record the date, total time, night driving time, and skills practiced for each session.

Log every drive immediately after it ends. A parent in Richmond forgot for two weeks and had to reconstruct dates from text messages and gas receipts. That delay cost their teen a week before the driving school would sign the completion certificate.

Does Virginia DMV Actually Check the Driving Log?

The DMV does not collect your physical logbook. Your parent or guardian certifies the hours by signing the DEC-1 driver education certificate or the licensing application. This signature is executed under penalty of perjury.

• The DMV trusts the certification signature. However, your high school driver's ed instructor or home-school program administrator will often require the physical log as proof before issuing your completion certificate.
• Homeschooled teens must also use the CSMA 19 for in-car maneuvers verification before the road test.
• The 14 periods of behind-the-wheel instruction (7 driving, 7 observing) from a state-approved course count toward your 45-hour requirement.
• Forgot to log hours? Estimate them retroactively using calendar history, text messages, or gas receipts. Do not guess. A teen in Virginia Beach had their license application paused because their retroactive log showed 15 night hours all on consecutive weekends. The instructor questioned it as unrealistic.

Before your final DMV visit, call your local DMV customer service center to confirm your completion certificate is on file. A family in Fairfax made an unnecessary 45-minute trip because their driving school's electronic submission had a processing lag.

What Are Common Virginia Permit Logging Mistakes?

The most common logging errors are missing nighttime hour notations, incomplete supervisor license numbers, unsigned entries, and logs that show fewer than 15 night hours. Each error gives the examiner grounds to refuse the road test.

1. Insufficient Night Hours: The 15 night hours are a strict minimum. Driving during dusk does not count unless it is after official sunset. A log from a Stafford teen was rejected for counting 5:30 PM drives in December as "night."
2. Unsupervised Practice: All 45 hours must be supervised by a licensed adult 21 or older seated beside you. Practice in a parking lot with only a sibling in the car does not count.
3. Signature Errors: The certifying parent must be the same on all forms. A mismatch between the log sheet and the DEC-1 certificate caused a rejection at the Norfolk DMV. The family needed a notarized affidavit to fix it.

If using the RoadReady app, export and print your log a week before your road test. The app's servers had an outage during a teen's final driving school appointment in Chesapeake, preventing access to the digital record.

Practice Requirements for Adult Drivers 18 and Older in Virginia

Virginia adults 18 and older have no legally required hour minimum. However, skipping adequate practice is the top reason adult applicants fail the road test. The DMV recommends at least 30 hours, including varied conditions such as highway driving and parking scenarios.

• Standard Path: Hold your permit for 60 days, then pass the DMV road skills test.
• Adult Waiver Course: Complete a state-approved course to waive the 60-day hold and the DMV road test. You receive a DTS D certificate for immediate licensing. Find approved schools at DMV's driver training school directory.
