Retaking Failed Test
Vermont Permit Test Failure: Retake After At Least 1 Day, $39 Fee
If you fail Vermont's learner permit knowledge test, you must wait at least one day before trying again. Each test attempt costs $39, and the learner permit test is taken online.
What Happens Immediately After Failing Vermont's Permit Test?
You cannot retake the Vermont learner permit knowledge test the same day. Vermont DMV requires you to wait at least one day before another attempt.
- Review any feedback shown after the test and note the topics you missed.
- Use the waiting period to review only the areas that caused problems rather than restarting the whole manual.
Vermont DMV's Permit Test Retake Policy
| Retake Rule | Current Vermont Rule |
|---|---|
| Waiting period | At least one day after a failed knowledge test |
| Test fee | $39 for each attempt |
| Retake method | Online learner permit knowledge test |
The knowledge-test retake is not an in-office kiosk appointment. Follow Vermont DMV's current online learner permit test process for your next attempt.
Whether You Need a Vermont DMV Appointment to Retake the Permit Test After Failing
No standard DMV office appointment is needed for the learner knowledge-test retake because the current test is online. If Vermont DMV specifically directs you to complete another transaction in person, follow those separate instructions.
What Does It Cost to Retake Vermont's Permit Test?
Each knowledge-test attempt costs $39. Five failed attempts would total $195 in knowledge-test fees.
| Fee Type | Amount | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Knowledge Test | $39.00 | Charged for the first attempt. |
| Retest Fee | $39.00 | Charged for each additional knowledge-test attempt. |
| Permit Issuance | $24.00 | Paid when the learner permit is issued after the applicant passes and completes the permit process. |
A normal failed attempt means paying the $39 test fee again. For payment disputes, refund questions, or unusual technical-payment problems, see the Vermont permit fees and refund guidance.
How Many Times Can You Take or Fail the Vermont Permit Test?
Vermont DMV says you may take the learner permit knowledge test as many times as you wish until you pass. The DMV does not publish a maximum number of failed attempts for this test.
Failing the Vermont permit test two times or three times does not trigger a separate attempt cap. You may try again after the required waiting period, and the regular test fee applies to each new attempt.
Before another attempt, focus on the rules and signs you missed instead of repeating the same study routine. If you have not tested yet, practice with Shoro AI's Vermont permit prep to prepare better and aim to pass on your first attempt; if you are retaking the test, use it to target your weak areas.
What Should You Do If the Vermont Online Permit Test Has a Technical Problem?
If the online test freezes, fails to load, disconnects, or produces another technical problem, save the details before trying again. Keep any error message, screenshot, payment confirmation, and the approximate time the problem occurred.
Contact Vermont DMV through its learner-permit-test support or general-information route and describe the problem. Do not assume a technical issue automatically qualifies for a free retest unless DMV confirms that for your case.
What Should You Do If You Paid for the Vermont Online Permit Test but Did Not Receive the Test Link?
Check the email address used for the transaction, including spam or junk folders, and keep the payment confirmation. If the test link still has not arrived, contact Vermont DMV through the learner-permit-test support route instead of booking an office test appointment.
How to Pass Vermont's Permit Test on Your Next Attempt
Focus on the categories you missed rather than rereading everything. Use the current Vermont Driver's Manual and practice questions to strengthen weak areas before paying for another attempt.
- Review the specific rules or signs that caused mistakes.
- Use practice tests to check whether those weak areas are improving.
- If you need reading, ASL, or another disability-related accommodation, see the Vermont permit accessibility and accommodations guide.
Once you are consistently passing practice questions, return to the online learner permit test after the required one-day wait.
