Your Vermont Learner's Permit remains valid until its printed expiration date after you turn 18. You do not need a new permit; your current card stays active. Turning 18 removes minor-specific requirements, but it does not allow you to drive alone on a learner's permit. You still need a qualifying supervising driver until you are licensed.
Turning 18 grants immediate adult status at the Vermont DMV. Your current permit card remains your valid instruction permit, no replacement, no reapplication, no additional fees for the status change itself.
Turning 18 does not create an automatic same-day road test. You still need a valid learner's permit, a road-test appointment, and the required test-day documents and vehicle. Until you pass and receive the appropriate license, Vermont's learner-permit supervision rule still applies.
The adult permit requirements remove the educational mandates for teens, you keep your permit but follow simpler rules.
| Changes at 18 | Still applies while you hold a learner's permit |
|---|---|
| Parental consent is no longer required. | Your permit must remain valid. |
| The teen driver-education and 40-hour practice-log requirements no longer apply. | You must follow learner-permit supervision rules while practicing. |
| The under-18 one-year permit holding period no longer applies. | You still must pass the road test to receive a Class D license. |
Parental permission is a minor requirement, so an applicant who is already 18 does not need a parent to sign the learner-permit application as a minor. That is separate from driving supervision: if you are still operating under a learner's permit, you must continue to drive with an eligible licensed supervisor until you are licensed.
Vermont's PARENT ARRIVED LATE rule applies to 18-year-olds too at joint appointments. One Barre snowstorm closed Route 2, Mom arrived 28 minutes late. Slot cancelled; joint rescheduling 8 days out. Vermont snowstorm closures sometimes earn supervisor exceptions; document the road closure report before calling the DMV.
Essex applicants hit the expired ID version of this. One student's ID expired during college, the renewal notice hit the old campus address. Turned away; Vermont DMV appointment set 7 days out. Update your Vermont DMV address before leaving for college or renewal notices disappear.
At 18, you still need the documents and payment required for the road test and license issuance. The standard road-test fee is $23. For the full document, vehicle, fee, and scheduling checklist, see the Road Test & License guide.
Keep practicing before the test even though the teen practice-log requirement no longer applies at 18. Use the Vermont Driver Manual for review and the Road Test & License guide for vehicle and appointment preparation.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"

"I was struggling with the specific road rules of my state until I used Shoro. The flashcards are a game changer for quick revision before the actual exam."
