Vermont Permit Supervisor Qualifications: Who Can Legally Sit Beside You

Vermont law sets specific eligibility rules for who can legally supervise a permit holder - age, license status, relationship, and sobriety all factor in. The rules define exactly who qualifies, and a cousin, neighbor, or suspended-license parent does not.

Who Can Legally Supervise a Vermont Learner's Permit Driver?

Vermont law allows several types of people to supervise a learner. The supervisor must meet the applicable license, age, relationship, and impairment rules.

Whether a Grandparent Can Supervise a Vermont Learner's Permit Driver

Yes, if the grandparent is licensed, unimpaired, and at least 25 years old, unless the grandparent is also the learner's legal guardian.

Whether a Spouse or Sibling Under 25 Can Supervise a Vermont Learner

Not merely because they are a spouse or sibling. Vermont's special relationship exception is for a licensed parent or guardian. Another licensed person generally must be at least 25 and unimpaired.

What License Must a Vermont Permit Supervisor Hold?

The supervisor must hold a valid driver's license that qualifies them to supervise under Vermont law. A suspended or expired license does not satisfy that requirement.

• A valid out-of-state license can qualify when the person otherwise meets Vermont's supervisor rules.
• The qualifying supervisor must sit beside the learner so they can provide immediate guidance.

If the person beside the learner no longer meets the legal supervisor requirements, the learner should not continue driving until another qualifying supervisor is present.

Whether a Vermont Permit Supervisor Can Be Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs

A qualifying supervisor must be unimpaired. Vermont's learner-permit supervision law does not use separate 0.08% and 0.00% BAC thresholds for the supervising passenger; it requires the supervisor not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Vermont law also says the learner is not treated as violating the supervision rule solely because an otherwise qualifying supervisor is under the influence. The supervisor's own conduct and any traffic-stop consequences are separate issues.

Supervisors should stay alert and avoid distractions. That is a safety recommendation, not a special Vermont legal ban on a supervising passenger using a phone.

When Do Vermont's 40 Supervised Practice Hours Apply?

The 40-hour practice requirement, including at least 10 nighttime hours, applies to drivers completing the requirements for a Vermont Junior Driver's License. It is not a universal practice-hour requirement for every adult learner.

Junior License applicants use Vermont's official VN-210 Driving Practice Log Sheet. For logging and certification details, see the Required Practice Hours guide.

What Vehicle Requirements Does Vermont DMV Set for the Road Test

The road-test vehicle must meet Vermont DMV safety and document requirements. The parking brake must work properly, but Vermont does not require a center handbrake that is specifically accessible to the examiner.

For the complete vehicle checklist, see the Road Test & License guide.

What Should Vermont Permit Holders Verify Before Every Drive?

• Confirm that the person beside the learner is currently licensed and qualifies under Vermont's supervisor rules.
• Make sure the supervisor is unimpaired and able to give immediate guidance.
• If the supervisor becomes unable to qualify or leaves the vehicle, stop driving until another qualifying supervisor is beside the learner.

For traffic-stop scenarios involving the supervising driver, see the Tickets & Suspensions guide.
