Utah Learner Permit Practice Hours: 40-Hour Rule and Age Exceptions

Utah requires 40 hours on the official Utah practice driving log (Form TC-008A) for supervised driving practice with a learner permit. Ten of those hours must be after sunset. Every session needs to be logged. Rules vary by age group.

How Many Supervised Hours Does Utah Require Before the Road Test?

Utah requires 40 hours of supervised driving practice, with at least 10 of those hours logged after sunset. These hours are mandatory for drivers under 18: no exceptions at the DLD skills test check-in.

Your required practice time depends on your age. For permit holders ages 15-17, Utah allows several qualifying supervisors, including a licensed parent or legal guardian, an approved driving instructor, or a responsible adult who signed for financial responsibility. At age 18 and older, the supervising driver must be licensed and at least 21.

• Minors (15-17): 40 supervised hours including 10 at night. Hold permit for 6 months. Complete driver education.
• Age 18: 40 hours with 10 at night. Driver education required. No fixed permit holding period.
• Adults 19+: 40 hours (10 night) plus a 90-day permit hold. A state-approved driver education course waives both the 90-day hold and the practice log entirely.

Full eligibility details are on the Utah DLD learner permit page.

Loging Utah Learner Permit Practice Hours

Failing for Parent Dl Expired is more common than you'd think. Salt Lake City: Parent's DL expired during a two-week backcountry hike: no DLD access. Teen turned away; parent renews first, next joint slot 9 days.

Use an official log accepted by the Utah Driver License Division. The DLD recommends the free Zero Fatalities Drive Time Log for digital tracking.

Paper logs work too. They must show date, total drive time, night drive time, and a supervisor signature for each session.

What Counts Toward Your 40 Hours?

All supervised driving counts. Hours with a certified instructor during driver's ed count toward your total.

Classroom time doesn't count. Simulator use doesn't either. Driving without a qualified supervisor in the front seat earns zero credit.

A teen in Provo used a notebook without separating night hours. The Orem DLD office rejected it. She had to re-log everything accurately before scheduling her skills test: three weeks of extra waiting.

Using More Than One Qualified Supervisor

Yes, practice can be completed with different adults as long as each person meets the supervision rule that applies to your age. Utah DLD lists several eligible supervisors for minors, while drivers age 18 and older must be supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21. Keep each session accurate in your log rather than treating one person as the only possible supervisor.

Using Utah's Drive Time Log Instead of a Paper Practice Log

Utah's Zero Fatalities program provides a Drive Time Log that lets families track the required 40 hours digitally and download the record for submission. Use the current tracker and keep the exported record available when you are preparing for licensing.

Does the Utah DLD Spot-Check or Verify Your 40-Hour Practice Log?

Yes. Examiners review the log at the start of your road test. Bring the original signed form: photocopies and screenshots are refused. Fraudulent logs carry serious legal consequences.

Yes. A parent or guardian certifies the log under penalty of perjury: a Class B Misdemeanor. Examiners review for completeness and plausibility before your road test.

DLD staff check totals, night hour minimums, and supervisor details. Some offices like Salt Lake may verify your supervisor's license status electronically.

Missing Practice-Log Entries

You must reconstruct the log with accurate dates and times. Estimating or rounding up hours counts as falsification.

A supervisor in Ogden signed for several weekly 4-hour blocks but couldn't recall specific dates when questioned by an examiner. The log was flagged for potential audit. if you can't remember when you drove, neither can they verify it, and that's the problem.

Review the Utah Driver Handbook for official logging guidance.

What If You Lose Your Utah Practice Driving Log Before the Road Test?

Rebuild only the sessions you can document accurately. Do not invent dates or hours to reach the 40-hour total. If your digital Zero Fatalities Drive Time Log was used, its current system stores entries and provides support for retrieving tracked hours. If you cannot document the required practice, contact Utah DLD before the road-test appointment.

How to split Your Utah Practice Driving Hours

Split hours across highway, residential, and night driving. Examiners notice when all 40 hours were logged on the same road type: it shows in your test performance.

Mix your environments. The table below shows a practical breakdown to build real skills before your road test.

Log at least 45 hours total. If an examiner disqualifies a 30-minute entry for illegibility, you still meet the 40-hour minimum. That buffer saves your appointment.

Consider signing the Parent-Teen Driving Agreement from Zero Fatalities. It helps structure practice expectations between you and your parent.

What Sends Utah Permit Holders Home Before the Road Test Even Starts?

Incomplete practice logs, expired supervisor licenses, and missing or damaged permit cards are the three most common reasons the Utah DLD turns away applicants at road test check-in.

Incomplete logs or form errors cause immediate rescheduling. Third-party testers also require the log and charge $40-$60 for the skills test.

Download DLD Form 6A for parent certification. Missing signatures are a common rejection reason.

A driver in St. George arrived for her test with a log missing the final parent certification signature on Form 6A. The appointment was canceled. Next available slot? Three weeks later. Don't be that person.
