Driving alone on a Texas learner license violates the supervision restriction. A learner must have a licensed adult age 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience in the front passenger seat. Driving without that supervisor is a restriction violation; it is not the same as never having a valid license.
If you have a valid learner license but drive without the required supervisor, the violation is the learner-license restriction. Texas Transportation Code Chapter 521 provides a fine of up to $200 for this type of violation.
| Situation | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Valid learner license, but no qualified supervisor | Violation of the learner-license supervision restriction. |
| Valid learner license, but the physical permit was left at home | A separate failure-to-display issue. See the dedicated forgot-permit guide. |
| No valid license or driving privilege | A different licensing offense; do not treat it as the same violation as driving alone on a valid learner license. |
If no qualified driver is available after a stop, the learner cannot simply continue driving alone. Review the separate Texas learner driving restrictions and supervisor requirements before practicing.
No general emergency exception appears in the Texas learner-license supervision rule. A learner license allows highway driving only while the learner has the license and is accompanied by a qualified driver age 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience. If an emergency makes the supervisor unable to continue, stop safely and arrange another lawful driver rather than continuing alone. See Texas Transportation Code §521.222.
The B restriction also requires a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat. Until DPS removes that restriction, driving alone is outside the restriction printed on the license. See Texas DPS restriction codes.
What if my supervising driver gets out of the car and I keep driving? Once the qualified supervisor is no longer in the required front seat, the learner no longer meets the supervision condition. Do not continue the trip alone.
The learner cannot be the person who drives away alone. Texas does not publish one statewide rule that decides whether every vehicle is released or towed after this type of stop. Follow the officer's instructions and use another qualified, lawful driver if one is available.
One citation for driving without the required supervisor does not create a fixed first-offense, second-offense, third-offense suspension sequence.
If a learner license is suspended during Phase I, the initial six-month holding period is extended by the number of suspension days. It does not restart from zero. See the current Texas DPS learner-license rules.
Court fines and DPS licensing actions are separate. Check the DPS License Eligibility system if a suspension or other enforcement action is actually placed on the record.
A conviction or crash can affect future insurance pricing, but Texas does not set one automatic percentage increase for a learner-license restriction violation. Insurers price the risk differently based on the driving record, claims, vehicle, and policy.
Keep the insurance discussion here brief. The separate Texas permit insurance-cost guide covers premium impact in more detail.
The supervision rule applies statewide. Do not rely on a particular city, neighborhood, checkpoint, or time of day as being more or less likely to enforce it.
The practical rule is simple: every practice drive should have a qualified supervisor in the front passenger seat. See the separate supervisor-requirements guide for the full qualification rules.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
