Texas Driving Test Documents Checklist: What to Bring for Your Road Test

The road-test document list is not the same for every applicant. What you need depends on age, driver-education path, and whether you test at DPS or through an authorized TPST provider.

At minimum, bring the valid learner or B-restricted credential that applies to your path, required application/course documents, a current Impact Texas Drivers certificate when required, and the test vehicle's valid registration and insurance. Teen applicants also have teen-specific driver-education, school-enrollment, and practice-log requirements.

Documents Required for a Texas Road Test

Your Texas learner permit must be current and unexpired. Any restriction codes printed on the permit apply during your test.

If restriction A appears, corrective lenses are required. Restriction B means a licensed driver age 21 or older must be in the front seat; it is not the vision restriction.

Getting your permit requires specific documents that establish identity and residency. The same permit serves as your primary ID at the road test.

What documents does a Texas teen need for the provisional driving test?

A teen should bring the valid learner license, the required teen driver-education proof, a current ITTD completion certificate, the 30-hour practice record, VOE when required, the applicable application paperwork, and the vehicle registration and insurance documents.

What does an 18–24-year-old need to bring to a Texas road test?

Bring the valid learner or B-restricted credential, the adult driver-education proof required for your age, a current ITAD certificate, the applicable application paperwork, and the vehicle registration and insurance documents.

What does an applicant age 25+ need for the Texas road test?

Applicants age 25+ do not have a state driver-education requirement. Bring the valid learner or B-restricted credential, the required ITD documentation for your testing path, the applicable application paperwork, and the vehicle registration and insurance documents.

Vehicle Documents: Registration, Insurance, and the Excluded Driver Trap

The test vehicle needs valid registration for the jurisdiction where it is registered and active insurance coverage. Detailed vehicle eligibility belongs in the Vehicle Requirements guide.

Bring current proof that the test vehicle is insured. If the vehicle is borrowed or rented, make sure the applicant is permitted to drive it and is not excluded from coverage.

• Registration must show an expiration date at least one week beyond your test date
• Insurance coverage cannot have lapsed, even by one day
• Rental cars require the rental agreement showing insurance coverage

Vehicle paperwork should match the vehicle being used for the test. See the Vehicle Requirements page for registration, insurance, rental, and out-of-state vehicle rules.

Driver Education and ITD Documents by Age

Teen applicants need the driver-education and Impact Texas Drivers documents required for the provisional-license path, plus school-enrollment verification when applicable. Adult applicants follow different document rules by age.

Use DL-14B if you are under 17 years 10 months; use DL-14A if you are 17 years 10 months or older. Bring the driver-education certificate that matches the course you completed.

For the road test, teens use the applicable Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program and adult applicants use Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) when required. The completion certificate must be within 90 days of the road test.

A Verification of Enrollment (VOE) is normally valid for 30 days. A VOE issued during June, July, or August is valid for 90 days from the issue date.

Do I need another VOE for my provisional license if DPS already saw one for my learner license?

Do not assume the earlier VOE is still current. Bring a current VOE when it is required for the provisional-license transaction; it is normally valid for 30 days, or 90 days when issued during June through August.

How recent must my Impact Texas Drivers certificate be?

The applicable Impact Texas Drivers completion certificate must be dated within 90 days of the road test.

How Texas DPS Verifies Your Practice Hour Log

Teen applicants must document the required 30 additional supervised practice hours, including at least 10 hours at night, on the applicable practice record. Keep the record complete and signed as required. Detailed logging rules belong in the Required Practice Hours guide.

Do I need to bring my 30-hour driving log to Texas DPS?

Teen applicants should bring the completed practice record showing the required 30 additional supervised hours, including at least 10 hours at night, when it is required for the provisional-license transaction.

What Happens If You Forget a Required Road-Test Document

Missing a document that is required for your specific road-test path can prevent the transaction from being completed. Use the current DPS checklist for your age and path before leaving for the appointment.

Bring the required certificates in the form DPS accepts. Do not rely on an informal screenshot when the official document or completion record is required.

Create a dedicated test folder the night before. Insert permit, insurance card, registration, all certificates, and payment method. Check everything against the official DPS checklist before leaving home.

The Vehicle Safety Inspection Before Your Test Begins

DPS checks whether the test vehicle meets the required safety and legal conditions before the road test. The full equipment checklist belongs in the dedicated Vehicle Requirements page.

The person supervising the learner must be at least 21, hold a valid license that qualifies them to operate the vehicle, and have at least one year of driving experience. The rule is not based on holding the current Texas license card for one full year.
