Scoring 70%: The Exact Math Behind the Texas Passing Threshold

The instruction permit exam has 30 multiple-choice questions with a 70% passing threshold. Getting 21 correct gives you exactly the minimum needed to pass.

Correct Answers	Wrong Answers	Percentage	Result
21	9	70%	Pass (Minimum)
20	10	67%	Fail

The test stops early if you get 10 wrong answers. Passing becomes mathematically impossible at that point, so the system terminates automatically.

Your 9-question buffer creates room for errors on road signs or traffic laws. Study the Texas Driver Handbook before your appointment.

How many questions can I miss on the Texas permit test and still pass?

You can miss up to 9 of the 30 questions and still reach the 70% passing score. Ten wrong answers puts you below the required score.

Is the passing score different for adults and teens?

No separate Class C passing percentage is published for teens versus adults. The knowledge-exam standard is 70%.

Do unanswered questions count as wrong on the Texas permit test?

Does Texas round a permit-test score up to 70%? Do not rely on rounding. The practical threshold is 21 correct answers out of 30.

What a Score Below 70% Means

Scoring just below 70% happens more often than you'd think. Real cases from Texas DPS offices show how narrow margins play out.

A Houston teen at the Gessner Office answered 20 questions correctly but fell one short. The fail-fast rule didn't trigger, so she completed all 30 questions. She got a printout showing missed questions, reviewed road signs that night, and retested successfully the next morning.

At Dallas North Carrollton Office, an applicant missed 10 questions on road signs and traffic laws by question 25. The system shut down early under fail-fast logic. this is why cramming the night before rarely works, you need solid preparation across all sections.

A San Antonio test-taker at Pat Booker Road Office got exactly 21 correct answers. Nine wrong answers didn't matter because she hit the minimum threshold. This proves you don't need perfection to walk out with your permit.

The 70% Passing Score for the Class C Knowledge Test

Do not use a generic 25-question/80% "motorcycle permit" comparison. Texas motorcycle licensing generally uses a TDLR-approved motorcycle safety course, and DPS notes a knowledge-test exception for applicants seeking a Class M license restricted to a moped. See Texas DPS motorcycle licensing.

After three failed examinations, or after the application period expires, a new application and fee are required. There is no universal 10-day wait rule after the third failure. See our
