Texas Permit Test Failure Rules: 24-Hour Wait After First Fail, 7 Days After Second, 3 Attempts Then Reapply

Failing your Texas DPS permit test triggers a mandatory waiting period before you can try again. Texas DPS requires a new application and fee after three failed exams or when the application reaches 90 days.

Failing the Texas Permit Test: What Happens at the Screen

Failing the Texas permit test displays an immediate red result screen with your score and a topic breakdown. A 24-hour wait is mandatory before your next attempt. Same-day retakes are not allowed. You see a red failure message on the computer screen the moment you finish. The system displays your score instantly.

Texas doesn't allow same-day retakes. A 24-hour waiting period starts the second you fail, regardless of which DPS office you visit.

Staff hand you a printout listing your missed topics. This breakdown shows exactly where you struggled, road signs, right-of-way rules, or traffic laws. Study this sheet before your next attempt.

24 Hours, Then 7 Days - The Retake Waiting Periods

First-time failures require a 24-hour wait before booking your next test. Second failures extend the wait to 7 calendar days.

• First failure: Wait 24 hours before retesting
• Second failure: Wait 7 calendar days before your next attempt

Texas DPS treats 90 days and three failed exams as separate limits. If either limit is reached, a new application and fee are required.

Situation	What Happens
Fewer than three failed exams and the application is still active	Continue under the existing application.
Three failed exams	Submit a new application and pay a new application fee.
The 90-day application period expires	Submit a new application and pay a new application fee, even if you did not use all three attempts.

What happens if my Texas driver-license application reaches 90 days before I use all three attempts?

The application period can end before you use all three attempts. Once the 90-day application window expires, you need a new application and fee before testing again.

When does the 90-day Texas DPS application period start?

The 90-day period belongs to the driver-license application itself. It is not a new 90-day clock that starts after your first failed test.

What happens if my application expires while I am waiting for another test appointment?

An appointment does not extend the application window. If the application expires before the next test, you need a new application and fee before you can continue.

When a Failed Test Requires Another Application Fee

Texas DPS does not list a separate Class C knowledge-test fee for each retake. The key cost trigger is the application limit: after three failed exams or after the 90-day application period ends, you must submit a new application and pay the application fee again.

Situation	Cost Rule
Retake while the same application is still active	No separate Class C knowledge-test retake fee is listed by Texas DPS.
After three failed exams or after 90 days	A new application and the applicable application fee are required.

For the full fee schedule, use the dedicated Permit Cost & Fees guide rather than treating every failed attempt as a separate paid test.

Texas Permit Test Attempt Limits and Repeated Failures

The Texas DPS Driver Handbook says a driver-license application is held for 90 days after an unsuccessful exam. After 90 days or three failed exams, a new application and fee are required. DPS states this as an application-cycle limit; it does not publish a lifetime maximum number of failed permit-test attempts.

How many times can I take the Texas permit test?

Texas DPS does not state a lifetime cap on how many times you may take the permit test. Under one active application, the important threshold is three failed exams. If you have fewer than three failed exams and the application has not reached 90 days, the same application can continue. How many times can I fail the Texas permit test? Three failures trigger a new application and fee, but DPS does not state a lifetime maximum across new application cycles.

What happens if I fail the Texas permit test two times?

Two failed exams do not by themselves trigger the DPS new-application rule. If your application is still within its 90-day window, you can continue under that application, subject to the retest timing and appointment rules described above.

What happens if I fail the Texas permit test three times?

After the third failed exam, DPS requires a new driver-license application and a new application fee before further testing.

Maximum Failed Attempts Under One Texas DPS Application

If you are asking whether there is a maximum number of failed attempts, DPS specifies the limit per application rather than a lifetime cap: three failed exams or the end of the 90-day application period requires a new application and fee. A new application starts a new application cycle under the current testing rules.

Use the age-appropriate application if you need to reapply: DL-14B if you are under 17 years 10 months, or DL-14A if you are 17 years 10 months or older. A parent or legal guardian still needs to provide the required consent for a minor applicant. DL-14B is the minor application itself, not a separate consent form added to DL-14A.

The Impact Texas Teen Drivers course is tied to the driving skills test, not to retaking the learner knowledge test. Do not treat ITTD as a knowledge-test reapplication requirement.

Texas DPS's published driver-record descriptions list license status and application information, crashes, violations, and suspensions; they do not list failed knowledge-test attempts as a driver-record item.

What to Do If a Technical Problem Affects Your Test

Texas DPS does not accept score appeals for failed permit tests. The one exception is a documented system malfunction such as a screen freeze or power outage: report it immediately before leaving the testing area.

No appeals exist for failed permit tests. Computer-graded scores are final.

The only exception involves documented technical errors, system freezes, power outages, or computer malfunctions during your test. Notify DPS staff immediately to file an incident report.

If approved, DPS may waive the 24-hour rule and allow a same-day retest. At the Austin Mega Center, a screen froze at Q15, timer kept running, no staff in the room. Session timed out. The applicant reported it before leaving the testing area, filed the incident report, and retested that afternoon without paying again. Texas note: Houston DPS offices have documented this happening on older terminals, always flag it before you leave the testing area.

Retake Planning and Common Mistakes to Avoid

The 24-hour rule applies statewide, not per office. Switching DPS locations does not create a same-day retake.

When your waiting period ends, use the Texas DPS appointment system to schedule the next test. Limited same-day appointments may sometimes be available, but do not rely on ordinary walk-in service.
