If you have a Texas motorcycle license (Class M), you need a Class C learner permit to legally practice driving a car. You can hold both a regular car permit and a motorcycle permit at the same time.
Your Class M license does not authorize you to drive a car. To add a Class C license, you must get a Class C learner permit and pass a road test in a car.
A rider in San Antonio with a full Class M license still applied for a Class C learner permit, completed the ITAD video, and scheduled a road test at the DPS on Perrin Beitel to legally drive their car.
Texas DPS allows concurrent learner licenses for Class C and Class M. They appear as separate authorizations on your license card with distinct restrictions.
| Permit Type | Key Restriction | Supervision Required |
|---|---|---|
| Class C Learner | No driving alone | Licensed adult 21+ in front seat |
| Class M Learner (J Restriction) | No passengers | Licensed motorcycle operator 21+ within sight |
A 17-year-old in Houston held both permits, practicing car driving with a parent on weekdays and motorcycle skills with an instructor on weekends, but couldn't carry passengers on either vehicle. Check your specific Texas permit restrictions before driving.
A Class C learner restriction controls how you may practice in a car; it does not by itself remove a valid Class M authorization. Read the class and restriction codes on the updated credential carefully because the restriction determines what supervision is required for each type of driving.
Texas can combine non-commercial classes on one credential, such as Class CM, and print the applicable restriction codes on the license. For example, restriction B means a licensed driver age 21 or older must be in the front seat for the supervised Class C driving. See Texas DPS restriction codes and driver-license fee classes.
The process differs by age. Your motorcycle license does not exempt you from car-specific requirements. Use the Texas driver-license application for your age: DL-14B if under 17 years 10 months, or DL-14A if 17 years 10 months or older.
Schedule your DPS road test appointment the same day you complete your ITAD video. The certificate expires after 90 days, and appointments in Austin mega-centers book 3 months out.
A Dallas motorcyclist, 25, skipped the written test but failed their first road test at the Carrollton DPS for not checking blind spots. They used the learner permit to practice for 3 more weeks before retesting.
No. A motorcycle safety course is motorcycle-specific training and is not the same as a Class C driver-education course. Whether separate Class C driver education is required depends on your age and the transaction you are completing, but the motorcycle course itself does not substitute for Class C training.
What happens to my Class M license if I fail the Class C road test? Failing the car skills test means you have not completed the Class C upgrade. It does not by itself cancel an otherwise valid Class M license; any separate suspension or eligibility problem would be a different issue.
Fee to add motorcycle class is $16. Learner permit under 18 costs $16. Find DPS locations and book appointments online.
A rider in El Paso paid the $16 fee but was charged extra because their motorcycle license was from another state, requiring a full Texas issuance. DPS fee structures can be confusing even for experienced drivers.
Minors need the parent consent form (DL-96) completed before testing. See full Texas learner rules and testing requirements for details on practice hours and road test scheduling.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
