Can I pick up my plastic permit at DPS instead of having it mailed? No standard pickup option is listed. DPS issues the temporary credential at the office and mails the official card, which normally arrives in about two to three weeks. See Texas DPS application steps.

Card Didn't Show Up? Here's What to Do

If your card is late, check the status online first, then contact DPS if needed.

Wait at least 4 weeks before escalating to DPS.
If the online status shows 'mailed' but you don't have it, call DPS at 512-424-2600 or visit your local office with your temporary permit and receipt.
Common delay causes: address errors on your application, mail returned to DPS, or seasonal backlogs.
To fix an address error, submit a DL-64 form with a $10 fee (waived if within 30 days of a move).
You can request a replacement card if yours is confirmed lost in the mail.

What happens if USPS returns my permit card to DPS?

Start with the DPS mailing-status tool. If the automated status does not resolve the problem, contact DPS Customer Service and verify the address on your record. If the address is wrong, follow the DPS address-change or replacement process instead of waiting for another mailing attempt. See Where's My Driver License or ID Card?

What Happens During In-Office Processing

For processing-time purposes, expect the visit to include check-in, document review, payment, vision screening, testing when required, photo capture, and issuance of the temporary credential. Missing documents or a failed required test can extend the visit or force a return trip.

For a station-by-station office walkthrough and appointment-day details, see the dedicated DPS Appointment Experience guidance.

How to Avoid Preventable Processing Delays

Check your document list the night before, book the first 8 AM slot at a suburban DPS office, and confirm your address on the clerk screen before permit printing to prevent mail delivery errors.

Follow these three steps to avoid preventable delays that add weeks to the timeline.

Verify every document on the official checklist against the originals in your hand the night before to avoid immediate rejection.
Book the first morning appointment (8 AM) at a suburban office like Pflugerville or Waco to bypass 1-2 hour afternoon crowds at mega centers.
Physically point to and confirm your full, correct address on the clerk's screen before they print your temporary permit to prevent mailing errors.

Most delays after issuance come from the mailing step, not the DPS visit itself. Understanding what comes next after receiving your Texas permit helps you start logging hours and book your road test without losing weeks.
