Shoro.aiYou must schedule an appointment at a Department of Public Safety office to get your Texas learner's permit. Walk-ins rarely work and waste your time. Before booking, confirm you meet the age requirements and have your documents ready. Review the complete teen learner license requirements before your appointment.
All Texas DPS driver license offices require appointments for learner permit applications. Walk-ins are turned away statewide.
Book your slot through the Texas DPS Scheduler before showing up. No exceptions.
Texas's walk-in denied policy caught a San Antonio applicant off guard. The website still showed walk-ins accepted-but that page hadn't updated since the policy change six months earlier. Turned away at the door, the first available slot was 14 days out. All Texas DPS locations are appointment-only; website pages lag badly.
When the scheduler shows no slots for 8+ weeks, use these tactics to find openings faster.
New slots appear as people cancel. Check between 7:00 AM and 7:45 AM daily for same-day openings released overnight.
Smaller towns have more availability than cities. Try Rosenberg instead of Houston, or Georgetown instead of Austin. Use the DPS office locator to find mega centers with more appointment slots.
Some locations offer limited standby slots released early morning, but availability is never guaranteed.
In major cities, walk-in lists fill by 9:00 AM. Good luck getting seen.
| Feature | Appointment | Walk-In |
|---|---|---|
| Service Guarantee | Guaranteed if on time. | High risk of denial. |
| Wait Time | 15-45 minutes. | 4+ hours, if seen. |
In March 2025, a walk-in at Carrollton Mega Center waited 5 hours and got turned away at 2:30 PM because the standby list was full.
Slots cancel after 30 minutes late. You must rebook through the scheduler. Multiple no-shows can trigger a temporary lockout from booking.
Cancel online via the scheduler using your confirmation details. You can also call the automated line at 512-424-2600. Cancel before 8:00 AM on your appointment day to avoid a no-show mark.
Dallas's San Jacinto Day holiday closure is a Texas-only trap: a family arrived to a dark DPS office on San Jacinto Day-not listed in the booking confirmation. Rescheduled 4 days out. San Jacinto Day does not appear on national calendars, so it surprises out-of-state residents every year. Learn more about retaking the failed knowledge test. For questions about rescheduling or cancellations, call 512-424-2600 if online fails.
Bring every original document to avoid rejection. Download and complete the DL-14A application form in advance but do not sign it until you are at the DPS office with a clerk present. Use the learner license checklist to verify you have everything before leaving home.
Verify your VOE form is current and signed by a school administrator. VOE is valid for 30 days normally. Valid 90 days June through August only. An expired VOE is a common reason for being turned away.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
