A Tennessee learner-permit violation can add points, affect GDL advancement, or lead to a separate suspension process. Follow the instructions on the citation and any Driver Services notice; a ticket and a juvenile Driver Improvement hearing are not the same step.
You must appear in juvenile court with a parent or guardian. You cannot prepay the fine to avoid court - mandatory appearance applies to all minors with permit violations.
A Memphis teen ticketed for tailgating paid $50 fine, $180 court costs, and $65 for a defensive driving course - nearly $300 for a single mistake. The Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual explains the full GDL point system.
| Violation | Points | Base Fine | Specific Consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speeding (1-5 mph over) | 1 | $10-$25 | Counts toward the GDL point total; does not automatically restart 180 days |
| Speeding (6-15 mph over) | 3 | $25-$50 | Counts toward the juvenile six-point review threshold |
| Speeding (16-25 mph over) | 4 | $50-$100+ | The combined point total determines whether juvenile Driver Improvement action is triggered |
| Texting/Handheld Device (under 18) | 6 | $50 | Six points can trigger a proposed-suspension notice and required juvenile hearing |
| Following Too Closely (Tailgating) | 3 | $50 + court costs | Three points alone do not reach the juvenile six-point review threshold |
| Failure to Yield / Stop Sign | 4 | $40-$50 | Common cause of intersection accidents |
| Reckless Driving | 6 | $150+ | Six points can trigger a proposed-suspension notice and required juvenile hearing |
| Seatbelt Violation | 0 | $50 | Does not create an automatic 90-day GDL delay under the learner-permit point rule |
| Curfew Violation (10 PM-6 AM) | 6 | $50 | Violation of a learner-permit restriction; affects GDL eligibility if the record has 6+ points |
| Driving Without 21+ Supervisor | 6 | $50 | Violation of a learner-permit restriction; can trigger juvenile Driver Improvement action |
| Underage Driving While Impaired (under 21; 0.02% or more, or statutory impairment) | N/A | $250 | One-year suspension; DUI on a Permit explains the separate DUI and underage-DWI rules. |
Total costs include base fines plus court costs ($90-$200+), defensive driving course fees ($25-$90), and reinstatement fee of $100 for minors. Parent/guardian may be fined up to $50 if they knowingly allow a violation.
Follow the date and document instructions on your citation. Separately, if Driver Services requires a juvenile Driver Improvement hearing, the teen and parent or guardian must attend; missing that hearing results in a mandatory six-month suspension.
Sometimes, but the programs are different. An eligible driver can remove up to five points from one speeding conviction by completing an approved four-hour course within 90 days of conviction. This option is available once in four years. A juvenile Driver Improvement hearing can separately require an eight-hour course; that course does not automatically remove points. The speeding conviction itself stays on the record. See Tennessee's speeding-point program.
For drivers under 18, 6 or more points within 12 months triggers a Notice of Proposed Suspension and the Driver Improvement process. Separately, GDL advancement from a learner permit requires fewer than 6 points during the immediate 180 consecutive days before applying.
For the specific situation, see Driving Alone Penalty, Forgot Permit, or DUI on a Permit in the Tennessee Tickets & Suspensions guides.
The driver and a parent or guardian must attend. For 6-9 points, Tennessee says driving privileges may be suspended for 3-6 months and the juvenile must complete a defensive driving course within 90 days. At 10 or more points, a six-month suspension applies. If suspended, the driver must complete all court and Department reinstatement requirements before driving again, including any required course, insurance proof, and fees. See Tennessee's juvenile program rules.
What happens if a teen misses the Tennessee Driver Improvement hearing? Tennessee says failure of the juvenile and parent or guardian to attend results in a mandatory 6-month suspension.
A permit conviction remains part of the driving record. For GDL advancement, the key learner-permit rule is not “any moving violation resets the clock.” The applicant must have fewer than 6 points for the immediate 180 consecutive days before applying for the Intermediate Restricted License.
Yes. Moving to another GDL stage does not wipe the driving record. Existing convictions and points can still affect juvenile Driver Improvement and whether the driver satisfies the safe-record requirement for later GDL advancement.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
