Tennessee Permit Solo Driving: Tickets, Points and GDL Impact

Driving alone with a Tennessee learner permit violates the permit restriction requiring a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front seat. A restriction violation can add points and affect GDL progression; Tennessee does not apply one automatic $50-fine-and-90-day-delay formula to every case.

Tennessee Law for Permit Holders

Your Tennessee Class PD permit only authorizes driving when a licensed driver age 21 or older sits in the front seat. No driving between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. All occupants wear seat belts. No emergency exception exists in Tennessee GDL law for unsupervised driving - not for errands, not for family emergencies.

• Must have a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat
• No driving between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
• All occupants must wear seat belts
• A restriction violation can add 6 points and trigger the juvenile Driver Improvement process; suspension is not automatic in every case.

Is there an emergency exception that lets a Tennessee permit holder drive alone? No. The front-seat supervisor requirement still applies.

What Happens If You Are Caught Driving Alone With a Tennessee Learner Permit?

In one Memphis case, a 16-year-old was pulled over on Poplar Avenue for a broken taillight. The officer issued a citation for unsupervised driving, triggering a mandatory court date and $150 total fine. The violation also flagged the record at the permit stage - delaying the road test eligibility clock.

Violating learner permit restrictions carries a statutory fine of $10 plus court costs. Total costs typically range from $50 to $200 depending on your county.

• Base statutory fine: $10
• Court costs added (varies by county)
• Total typical range: $50-$200
• Additional fees for missed court dates or continuances
• Potential mandatory driving course costs ($50-$150)

Reckless driving or DUI can lead to a separate charge in addition to the learner-permit restriction violation. See the Traffic Violations and DUI guides for those consequences.

Follow the court's order and any separate Driver Services notice. Traffic Violations on Permit covers general hearing, suspension, and course requirements.

Does driving alone automatically suspend a Tennessee learner permit?

No. Driving contrary to a learner-permit restriction is a 6-point violation. For a driver under 18, reaching 6 or more points within 12 months triggers Tennessee's juvenile Driver Improvement process and a hearing; suspension depends on the point level and hearing outcome.

Permit Violations and Your Tennessee License Timeline

A permit-restriction violation is assigned 6 points. To advance to the Intermediate Restricted License, a teen needs fewer than 6 points during the immediate 180 days before applying. A lower-point ticket alone does not automatically restart the period. See Traffic Violations on Permit for point totals and suspension rules.

What happens if a Tennessee permit holder is caught driving alone more than once?

Repeated restriction violations can add more points and lead to stronger Driver Improvement action. Tennessee says a juvenile who again accumulates 6 or more points within 12 months after a first Driver Improvement offense can face a 6- or 12-month suspension depending on the record.

Can a Driving-Alone Violation Affect Your Insurance Rate?

A driving-alone violation can affect future insurance pricing, but the amount and timing depend on the insurer, conviction, and driving record. See Insurance Cost Impact for premium details.

What If Driving Alone Also Involves Reckless Driving or DUI?

Reckless-driving or DUI charges are separate from the basic permit-restriction violation. See the Traffic Violations and DUI guides rather than applying the driving-alone penalty to those offenses.

What to Do If You Receive a Citation for Driving Alone on a Tennessee Permit

Speak directly with a Tennessee traffic or juvenile court attorney if charges are serious. Never ignore the citation - failure to appear triggers additional charges, license suspension, and a possible arrest warrant.

County clerks and courts require your permit, citation, and proof of insurance at the hearing. Missing documents cause a continuance that prolongs restrictions. Bring your physical permit card - not a phone screenshot. Bring the parent or guardian too; most counties require their presence for minors.
