After getting your Tennessee learner permit, your upgrade timeline depends on your age. Drivers under 18 follow the full GDL ladder; adults 18 and older skip intermediate stages and go straight to a Class D road test.
| Driver | Teen GDL hold / practice | Road-test path | License after passing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 18 | At least 180 days with the learner permit and 50 supervised hours, including 10 at night | Road skills test after all teen eligibility rules are met | Intermediate Restricted License |
| 18 or older | No teen 180-day GDL hold and no teen 50-hour log | Road skills test after completing the adult first-time driver requirements | Class D license |
For teens, the learner permit is the supervised-practice stage before the Intermediate Restricted License. Road-test eligibility depends on age, the required permit-holding period, supervised practice, and the driving record. See Road Test & License for the full upgrade timeline and Required Practice Hours for the 50-hour certification rules.
Yes. They are separate teen GDL requirements. See Road Test & License for the holding-period rule and Required Practice Hours for the practice requirement.
A qualifying teen who passes the road skills test moves to the Intermediate Restricted License stage, not directly to an unrestricted Class D license.
Drivers age 18 or older do not follow the teen 180-day GDL hold or the teen 50-hour log. After completing the adult first-time driver requirements, they can schedule the Class D road skills test through Tennessee Driver Services.
Use practice time to become comfortable with normal traffic, backing, turns, lane changes, parking, and the vehicle you will use for the test. Check that the vehicle is registered, insured, and in safe operating condition before test day.
No. The 50-hour supervised-driving log is part of the under-18 GDL path. Adults age 18 or older do not use that teen log requirement for the Class D road-test path.
Use Tennessee Driver Services e-Services to schedule the road skills test at a location that offers that service. For road-test availability and location details, see Road Test Location Choice.
A learner-permit holder must arrive legally with a qualified licensed driver age 21 or older. Detailed document requirements are covered in Road Test Documents.
Practice the normal driving skills covered by the Tennessee Driver License Manual and use a vehicle that meets the state's road-test requirements. Teen applicants should also review Tennessee driving restrictions that apply after moving to the Intermediate Restricted License.
Bring the required documents and arrive early. Tennessee advises customers with appointments to arrive about 15 minutes early. If you arrive late, the appointment may be cancelled and you may be handled as a walk-in; there is no statewide rule that being exactly five minutes late automatically forfeits the appointment and fee.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
