Tennessee learner permit The standard Tennessee teen GDL credential sequence totals $47.00 in listed state fees from the under-18 learner permit through the Class D upgrade. An adult first-time Class D credential has a different state-fee path and currently totals $28.00. Optional driving-school, document, vision, or third-party service costs can increase the real total.
Tennessee charges separate fees as drivers move through the licensing path.
County Clerk partner charges apply only to transactions those offices are authorized to handle, such as eligible renewals or replacements, not an original learner permit.
| Path | State-Fee Sequence | State Total | Optional Costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teen standard GDL path | PD $10.50 + Intermediate Restricted $24.50 + Intermediate Unrestricted $2.00 + Class D upgrade $10.00 | $47.00 | Private lessons, third-party services, document replacement, or other optional expenses |
| Adult first-time Class D path | Standard Class D credential | $28.00 | Private instruction or other optional services |
The teen total reflects the standard sequence of state credential fees. Private driving lessons are optional; Tennessee's required supervised practice for teens does not require buying a driving-school package. See Behind-the-Wheel Training Cost for optional lesson pricing.
The standard Class D operator credential is currently $28.00 in Tennessee's state fee schedule. Optional instruction, document replacement, vision care, or private services can increase the real out-of-pocket total.
The standard teen sequence shown in Tennessee's current fee schedule totals $47.00: $10.50 for the under-18 PD permit, $24.50 for the Intermediate Restricted credential, $2.00 for Intermediate Unrestricted, and $10.00 for the Class D upgrade.
Knowledge-test failures add the $2 application fee for each failed PD, D, or H attempt. Tennessee does not give the first two failed attempts for free. For waiting periods and attempt rules, see Failed & Retakes.
No separate state road-test fee is listed for taking the Class D skills test at a Tennessee Driver Services Center. Private schools or third-party providers can charge their own optional testing, vehicle, or service fees.
Does choosing REAL ID increase the Tennessee driver-license fee? No separate REAL ID surcharge is added to the equivalent credential fee. REAL ID changes the document requirements, not the base credential price.
State fees are only part of the possible total. Other costs depend on the applicant's situation.
The SF-1256 supervised-driving certification requires a qualifying signature, but Tennessee does not require that signature to be notarized.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
