Tennessee Failed Permit Test: 24-Hour Wait & 2 Online Tries

If you fail the Tennessee knowledge test, you cannot retake it the same day. Tennessee requires at least a one-day wait before another knowledge-test attempt. Teen applicants ages 15-17 can make up to two online attempts; after two online failures, future knowledge testing must be completed in person.

Immediately After You Fail the Tennessee Permit Test

You see a failed-test result and must wait at least one day before retaking the knowledge test. The same minimum wait applies after later failed knowledge-test attempts. Changing Driver Services locations does not remove the waiting period because prior failures are recorded in Tennessee's system.

Can You Retake the Tennessee Permit Test at a Different Driver Services Center the Next Day?

Yes, you can use another location that offers knowledge testing once the required waiting period has passed. A different location does not erase the previous failure or let you retest early.

Can you retake the Tennessee permit test the same day at another location? No. Tennessee does not allow a knowledge-test retake on the same day, even if you go to a different Driver Services Center.

How Many Times Can You Take or Fail the Tennessee Permit Test?

Tennessee's current official materials set a maximum of two attempts for the online knowledge test. After two online failures, later knowledge-test attempts must be taken in person at a Driver Services Center.

For in-person knowledge testing, Tennessee's current Driver License Manual states the waiting and failed-test fee rules but does not state a maximum number of failed attempts. That means the official source does not support assuming a three-attempt cap or another fixed in-person failure limit.

If you fail two times, an online applicant must move to in-person testing. If you fail three times overall, the same one-day in-person retest rule continues unless Driver Services gives you different instructions for your case. Tennessee does not publish a separate three-failure penalty for the knowledge test.

How Much Do You Pay After Failing the Tennessee Permit Test?

The verified recurring charge after a failed PD, D, or H test is the $2 application fee. Tennessee does not state that one application fee covers three failed in-person attempts.

See the Tennessee Driver License Manual for the current failed-test waiting and application-fee rules.

What to Do After Failing the Tennessee Permit Test

Use the waiting period to review the topics you missed in the Tennessee Driver License Manual. For more detailed study strategy and practice questions, use the Tennessee permit practice-test guide rather than treating this page as a full study plan.

Before your next attempt, practice with Shoro AI to prepare better and improve your chances of passing on the first try.

Multiple test failures do not appear on your permanent driving record. Tennessee does not require an adult age 18+ to complete driver education simply because the knowledge test was failed more than once.

Documents You Need to Bring When Retaking the Tennessee Knowledge Test

Bring the required licensing documents again when you return for another test. Use original or certified documents where Tennessee requires them, and make sure any time-sensitive school or eligibility document is still valid.

If an under-18 applicant still uses SF-1010, remember that Tennessee has a summer exception for forms signed within the last 30 days of the school year. A teen who has already graduated may use a high-school diploma or GED certificate instead of SF-1010 where the teen licensing rules allow it.

Causes of Online Tennessee Permit Test Failures

Tennessee's online test has strict rules. Leaving the test window can cause an automatic failure, and applicants who are still testing at the 30-minute point must complete the required parent or guardian reauthentication.

For a power or network interruption, the current rule depends on how long the interruption lasts: if it is under 60 minutes, the test can be resumed after the parent or legal guardian reauthenticates; if it lasts more than 60 minutes, the attempt is automatically failed.

Detailed timer, browser, and online-format rules belong in the Tennessee Permit Test Format and Test Time Limit guides. Tennessee's current online rules are published on the online knowledge-test page.

Can You Appeal a Failed Tennessee Permit Test?

You cannot appeal a normal failed test score. Grading is automated and final. Verified technical or system problems may be handled separately from an ordinary incorrect-answer failure, so report a technical problem through Tennessee Driver Services rather than assuming the score can simply be changed.

If you must return in person, make sure the documents required for your transaction are still current before traveling. Appointment timing and office wait times are covered in the Tennessee appointment guide; full document checklists are in the required-documents guide.

Real-World Tennessee Permit Test Failure and Recovery Examples

A teen who fails the online knowledge test twice cannot make a third online attempt. The next knowledge-test attempt must be completed in person after the required waiting period.

An applicant who fails an in-person test cannot go to another Tennessee location later the same day to bypass the waiting rule. Once the minimum wait has passed, the applicant may use another location that offers knowledge testing, but the earlier failure remains in the statewide system.

If an online test is interrupted by a network or power problem, the applicant should follow Tennessee's current interruption rule: an interruption under 60 minutes can be resumed after proctor reauthentication, while an interruption over 60 minutes results in an automatic failed attempt.
