A motorcycle license (Class M) does not grant car-driving privileges. You must qualify separately for the Class D passenger-vehicle path. Under-18 applicants follow teen GDL requirements; adults follow the Adult First-Time Driver process.
Tennessee allows simultaneous Class PD (car) learner permit and Class PM (motorcycle) permit. Your driving record shows both privileges, but you carry only one card.
Yes, when the motorcycle privilege remains properly carried on your Tennessee credential. Tennessee allows motorcycle driving privileges to be issued on their own or with a regular driver license; the motorcycle-secondary classification is used when motorcycle privileges are added to another primary license. See Tennessee's motorcycle license rules.
Holding a motorcycle license does not waive the Class D testing requirements for a car license. You still need to complete the Class D process that applies to your age.
Review the Comprehensive Driver License Manual and the required documents guide before applying.
Do not assume it does. Tennessee treats the Class P-M motorcycle learner permit and the Class D/PD passenger-vehicle path as separate privileges. For an under-18 car license, the 180-day rule is tied to the teen GDL learner-permit requirement.
A Class M credential does not itself grant Class D car privileges. Follow Tennessee's adult Class D process. Because a motorcycle-only applicant may already have completed a Class D knowledge test, Driver Services can confirm which test results are already on your record before you schedule the car road test.
The restrictions for each permit type differ significantly - follow the rules for the vehicle you are operating at that moment.
| Class PD (Car) Permit | Class PM (Motorcycle) Permit |
|---|---|
| Licensed adult (21+) in front seat required | No passengers allowed |
| Under-18 learner permit: no driving from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.; supervision is still required at permitted times. | Daylight hours only (4 a.m. to 8 p.m.) |
| No geographic radius limit | Strict 20-mile radius from home |
| Under-18 GDL applicants: 50-hour certification (SF-1256). The teen 50-hour requirement does not apply at age 18+. | No driving log, but cylinder size limited to 650cc |
A dual permit holder in Knoxville could legally drive a car to Pigeon Forge with a licensed adult, but riding their motorcycle on the same trip would violate the 20-mile radius restriction from their home address. The permit restrictions don't cross-apply - each vehicle type has its own rules.

Apply through Tennessee Driver Services and complete the required Class D testing. For scheduling and walk-in details, use the Tennessee appointment guide.
Three mistakes dominate at Tennessee Driver Services Centers for dual applicants:. The Tennessee e-Services portal at dl.safety.tn.gov handles most permit transactions except first-time issuance, which requires an in-person visit.
Keep the car and motorcycle requirements separate. A motorcycle credential does not waive the Class D test, and the teen 50-hour driving certification applies only when the under-18 GDL path requires it.
Use the appointment guide for center timing and scheduling, and Road Test & License for test-day logistics.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
