Tennessee's application has three main steps: prepare your documents, complete the knowledge test, and finish the in-person Driver Services visit.
You must be 15 years old to apply for a Class PD learner permit.
If you are under 18, you must also prove school attendance. If you have already graduated, bring your high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Otherwise, bring the SF-1010 Certificate of Compulsory School Attendance signed within the last 30 days.
Bring the required identity or lawful-presence documents, Social Security documentation, Tennessee residency proofs, and the school document that applies to you. For the full document checklist, see Tennessee learner permit eligibility and documents.
The Class D knowledge test covers Tennessee traffic laws and road signs. The test has 30 questions and requires 24 correct answers to pass.
Teens ages 15-17 may be eligible to test online; in-person testing is also available. See the Tennessee permit-test format and timing guides and the failed-test and retake guide for those details.
Passing the knowledge test does not issue the permit by itself. You still have to complete the remaining document, vision, and issuance steps. If you passed online, keep the test receipt or emailed confirmation. Tennessee also states that Driver Services may require an in-person retest even after an online pass. See Tennessee's online knowledge test rules.
At the Driver Services Center, staff review your documents and complete the remaining permit steps, including the vision screening, photo or signature steps, and fee payment.
For scheduling, rescheduling, walk-in availability, and what happens during the visit, see the Tennessee Driver Services appointment guide.
The permit cannot be issued until Driver Services accepts the required documents. Ask which document needs to be corrected before returning.
Use the required-documents checklist to prepare the replacement proof. For a return visit, walk-in availability, and testing hours, see the Driver Services appointment guide.
Do you have to restart a Tennessee permit application after your documents are rejected? Not automatically. The permit cannot be issued until you return with acceptable documents, but a document problem does not by itself mean every completed step must be repeated. Bring the corrected originals or certified copies and follow any retest instruction Driver Services gives you.
Three rejections dominate Tennessee Driver Services centers - wrong birth certificate, an expired SF-1010 when that form is required, and an absent parent without a notarized form.
Before visiting, check that your application documents are ready and that you know which steps you still need to complete.
For booking, walk-in, and center-timing advice, use the Tennessee Driver Services appointment guide.
Before you go, review Tennessee's official teen license page for any updates.
You must hold your learner permit for at least 180 days before moving to an Intermediate Restricted License. After you get your permit, learn about what to do next and how many practice hours you need before taking your driving test.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
