The correction method depends on the error. Name or date-of-birth errors may require an in-person Driver Services correction with supporting documents. Address changes are different: Tennessee allows the address record to be updated online, at a self-service kiosk, by mail, or at a Driver Services Center, and the new address does not have to be printed on the physical permit.
Data entry mistakes cause most permit errors at Tennessee Driver Services Centers:. The Tennessee e-Services portal at dl.safety.tn.gov handles most permit transactions except first-time issuance, which requires an in-person visit.
Report errors immediately to the Tennessee Department of Safety. Don't wait until you plan your next steps after getting your permit - an error discovered on road test day forces a reschedule.
Report the error to Driver Services promptly and bring the permit with any documents that help confirm the correct record. Do not wait until a later license or road-test transaction to raise an administrative error.
First identify the type of error. Do not use one correction process for every field.
| Error Type | Correction Method | Replacement Card Required? | What to Have Ready |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address | Update the state record online, at a kiosk, by mail, or at a Driver Services Center. | No. A replacement is optional if you want the new address printed on the card. | Information Tennessee requires for the address-change transaction. |
| Name | Use the Driver Services process for a legal name correction. | May be required when the credential itself must be corrected. | Legal documents proving the correct name. |
| Date of birth or other identity detail | Contact or visit Driver Services with documents proving the correct information. | May be required when the credential itself must be corrected. | Original identity documents showing the correct detail. |
For address changes, see Tennessee's official Address Change page.
A simple printing or data-entry error should be reported to Driver Services with documents showing the correct legal name. A legal name change uses Tennessee's name-change process and requires original or certified supporting documents such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Tennessee advises updating Social Security records first for a legal name change. See Tennessee's name-change rules.
Updating only the address on Tennessee's records has no fee. If you also order a duplicate permit or license showing the new address, the normal duplicate fee applies.
For other correction types, confirm the current fee for the transaction before visiting Driver Services.
Name or date-of-birth errors should be corrected promptly because they can create identity and licensing problems.
Address changes are different. Tennessee requires the Department to be notified of an address change, but the law does not require the new address to be printed on the physical license or permit. Update the state record using one of Tennessee's allowed address-change methods.
Use documents that prove the specific information being corrected. Name and date-of-birth corrections require identity or legal documents that support the correct information.
For an address-only update, follow Tennessee's address-change instructions instead of assuming you need an in-person identity-correction visit.
If the permit shows a misspelled legal name or incorrect birth date, contact Driver Services and bring documents that prove the correct information.
If you move to a new Tennessee address, update the Department's record. You do not have to order a replacement card solely to print the new address unless you want one.
Most correction delays are preventable with one simple habit: check your permit details before leaving the center on the day it's issued.
Can a Tennessee permit error be corrected before you leave the Driver Services Center? If you notice the problem at issuance, show it to the examiner before leaving and ask for the record or credential to be corrected. Checking the name, date of birth, class, address, and issue details at the counter can prevent a separate return visit.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
