Most first-time South Dakota instruction permit applicants need original or certified proof of identity/lawful status, accepted Social Security number evidence, and two qualifying South Dakota address documents. A lawfully present nonimmigrant who has not been assigned an SSN may instead use documentation demonstrating nonwork-authorized status under SDCL 32-12-3.4.
Review the current SD DPS required-documents list before your appointment.
The standard first-time checklist covers identity/lawful status, SSN evidence when one has been assigned, and two South Dakota address documents. The exact proof changes for certain applicants.
| Applicant | SSN / Status Evidence | Address Evidence | What Changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard applicant with an SSN | Accepted SSN document showing the full number | Two qualifying South Dakota address documents | Standard first-time document set |
| Minor using parent/guardian mail | Same SSN rule or lawful no-SSN exception, as applicable | Parent or guardian mail may be used for a minor under 18; parental consent requirements still apply | Address documents may be in the parent/guardian's name |
| Lawfully present nonimmigrant with no SSN and nonwork-authorized status | Documentation demonstrating nonwork-authorized status instead of SSN evidence | Two qualifying South Dakota address documents | Must still prove lawful status; the exception is only to SSN evidence |
See SDCL 32-12-3.4 and the current SD DPS document list.
Use a certified copy with a raised seal from the issuing state's Vital Records office. Hospital keepsake certificates with footprints are rejected at every South Dakota exam station counter.
At the Aberdeen office, a court-ordered name change had been completed but the Social Security card still showed the old name. The DPS flagged the mismatch immediately - court name changes do not auto-notify the SSA. A separate SSA visit is always required. The applicant waited three weeks for the SSA update before reapplying.
Two documents from different sources, same name, same current physical address, both less than one year old. If you use a PO Box, one document can show that; the second must show your physical address.
A Watertown applicant brought a handwritten landlord letter as residency proof - rejected. A lease agreement or utility bill in their name was required, and they had five days to return with the right document.
Bring the completed application, accepted identity and lawful-status proof, SSN evidence or qualifying nonwork-authorized-status documents, two residency proofs, parental consent if under 18, and the $38 fee. Check each item before leaving for the exam station.
