South Dakota's instruction permit uses the Driver License/ID Card Application- often called the DLAPP internally. There is no public form number like "DL-44." You must complete it by hand with wet ink, print it at home, and bring the signed original to your exam station appointment. Digital submissions for first-time permits are not accepted. Download the form from sd.govor pick up a paper copy at any SD Driver Exam Station.
Download the current Driver License/ID Card Application from dps.sd.gov, complete it at home with original wet ink, and print it on standard paper. Completing it at the counter risks delays.
A Watertown applicant used a library computer that had last year's SD DPS template saved locally. The form was rejected at the counter - the current version was printed at the DMV front desk and the application resubmitted the same day. South Dakota tip: always download fresh from apps.sd.gov the morning of your visit.
Who completes a minor's application? A parent or guardian can help prepare the information. Follow the form's signature labels: helping fill it out does not replace the applicant's required signature or the separate parental-consent requirement. Ask the examiner for help if the applicant cannot complete a field.
Any legal parent or guardian can sign the form. Signing affirms the information is true under penalty of perjury - false statements or concealment of facts is grounds for immediate permit cancellation.
All South Dakota permit requirements are covered in the South Dakota permit guide.
Check the South Dakota learner's permit guide for current rules and fees.
If you need a testing or medical accommodation, follow the dedicated South Dakota disability accommodations guide; accommodation procedures are not part of the application-form instructions.
If you need to correct a mistake on a permit application before the examiner accepts it, make sure the final form is clear, complete, and carries the required original signatures. If the correction makes the entry unclear or changes signed information, the safest option is to complete a fresh current form.
Do not replace a required wet-ink signature with a digital, stamped, or copied signature. If you are unsure whether a correction is acceptable, ask the examiner before submitting the form.
Electronic, digital, or stamped signatures are rejected. PO Box addresses, outdated form versions, and incomplete medical sections all cause counter rejection and require a reschedule.

"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
