To take your driving test in South Carolina, you must bring specific paperwork. Missing any item will cause the SCDMV examiner to cancel your test immediately.
Every road-test applicant needs the documents and vehicle paperwork that apply to the transaction. Keep adult requirements separate from the additional 15- and 16-year-old teen-pathway documents.
| Category | What to bring |
|---|---|
| Every applicant | Valid beginner's permit and the identification/application items SCDMV requires for the licensing transaction |
| Applicable 15-16 teen pathway | PDLA and the required driver-education/practice certifications; DL-008A is optional, not mandatory |
| Test vehicle | Valid registration and proof of insurance for the vehicle used |
Applicants under 18 generally must satisfy the 180-day permit-holding rule; applicants age 18 or older may take the regular Class D road test after at least 30 days.
An adult applicant should bring the valid beginner's permit, a licensed driver, and the test vehicle's required registration and insurance information, plus any application or identity documents SCDMV requires for the licensing transaction. The 15-16 PDLA and 40-hour teen requirements do not automatically apply to an adult.
Do I need Form 447-NC again when I move from a permit to a driver's license? Form 447-NC is SCDMV's application for a beginner's permit, driver's license, or ID card and is used for licensing transactions. If SCDMV requires an updated application for your license issuance, complete the current form rather than relying on an old permit application.
For 15- and 16-year-old applicants using the teen licensing pathway, the PDLA certifies school attendance, driver education, and driving practice. Do not describe SCDMV's DL-008A as a required road-test form: the form itself states that use of the supervised-driving log is optional.
40-hour practice requirement: The applicable teen pathway uses 40 supervised hours, including 10 hours at night.
Adult signature: Do not limit the process to a parent or legal guardian in every case. SCDMV allows an authorized adult who meets the applicable statutory category, and the minor-consent process should follow current SCDMV rules.
SCDMV publishes the PDLA requirement for 15- and 16-year-olds applying for their first license. It should not be presented as a universal road-test document for every 17-year-old.
No. The current SCDMV DL-008A says the supervised-driving log is optional. For the applicable 15-16 teen pathway, the PDLA is the formal certification document.
Use SCDMV's qualified-adult minor-consent rules rather than assuming only a parent or legal guardian can act. The qualified adult must fit an authorized statutory category and follow the SCDMV consent process.
Bring the test vehicle's valid registration and proof of insurance. The person who accompanies a permit holder to the test must be a qualifying licensed driver; SCDMV does not require that person's valid license to have been issued by South Carolina.

SCDMV policy is strict. If you forget a required document, your test is canceled. A parent cannot bring it during your test. You must reschedule, which can mean weeks of waiting.
Pay the $25.00 licence fee. Your permit is surrendered. A Temporary Driving Certificate is issued same day and the plastic licence arrives by mail in 7 to 15 business days.
Print your insurance card and registration the night before to avoid last-minute printer issues that cause missed appointments.
Verify all dates on your permit, registration, and insurance are current at least one week prior to prevent automatic rejection at the counter.
Arrive 30 minutes early to review your document checklist with a parent or supervisor to catch any omissions before your name is called.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
