After getting your South Carolina Beginner's Permit, your next steps depend on age. Drivers under 18 generally need a 180-day permit hold, while applicants age 18 or older need at least 30 days. The driver-education course and 40 supervised hours, including 10 at night, apply to the 15- and 16-year-old teen licensing pathway.
? 18+ Rule: Adults 18+ need only 30 days on the permit before the road test.
The permit stage is still supervised driving. From 6 AM to midnight, drive only with a licensed driver age 21 or older who has at least one year of driving experience seated beside you. From midnight to 6 AM, the accompanying driver must be a licensed individual who qualifies under S.C. Code §56-1-100(A)(1)-(7).
For 15- and 16-year-old applicants moving through the teen licensing pathway, the later license requirements include an approved driver-education course and 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night. Those requirements should not be applied to every adult permit holder or every 17-year-old.
Use the dedicated Driving Restrictions, Supervisor Requirements, and Required Practice Hours guides for the full rules.
Does the 40-hour practice requirement apply to adults? No. SCDMV ties the 40 supervised hours, including 10 at night, to the 15- and 16-year-old teen licensing pathway. An adult first-time driver still needs a beginner's permit, but the adult road-test waiting period is at least 30 days.
The permit-to-license path changes by age, so use the dedicated Waiting Period guide for the exact holding period that applies to you.
| Age | Permit hold | Driver education / 40 practice hours | License after passing, if otherwise eligible |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15-16 | 180 days | Required for the teen licensing pathway; 40 supervised hours include 10 at night | Conditional License if at least 15½ but under 16; Special Restricted License at age 16 |
| 17 | 180 days | Do not automatically apply the 15-16 professional-training/40-hour requirement | Regular Class D path |
| 18+ | At least 30 days | No teen driver-education or 40-hour requirement | Regular Class D path |
Use the Waiting Period and Required Practice Hours pages for the detailed rules instead of treating all ages the same.
SCDMV lists the driver-education course, PDLA, and 40 supervised hours for 15- and 16-year-olds applying for their first license. Those requirements should not automatically be applied to a 17-year-old, although a first-time 17-year-old still must satisfy the applicable 180-day beginner's permit hold.
Because you are still under 18, the 180-day beginner's permit holding period still applies. Once you are 17, SCDMV's published 15-16 driver-education, PDLA, and 40-hour package is no longer automatically the same licensing requirement.
When you are eligible, bring your valid permit and the age-specific documents that apply to you. The vehicle must have valid registration and insurance and meet SCDMV safety requirements.
For the exact paperwork, see the Road Test Documents guide. For the vehicle inspection and borrowed/rental vehicle rules, see Vehicle Requirements — Road Test.
SCDMV's DL-008A supervised-driving log is optional; do not treat it as mandatory road-test paperwork. Likewise, do not download an online PDLA copy: SCDMV accepts PDLA forms from authorized issuers for the applicable teen pathway.
The credential you receive after passing depends on your age and eligibility under South Carolina's graduated licensing framework. The age-by-age outcomes are summarized in the question below.
Conditional and Special Restricted drivers remain subject to graduated-license restrictions. A permit, Conditional License, or Special Restricted License is subject to a six-month excessive-points suspension when the driver accumulates six or more points.
After SCDMV completes the licensing transaction, the permanent credential is centrally issued rather than treated as a one-size-fits-all “Conditional License” for every applicant.
The result depends on age. An eligible applicant who is at least 15½ but under 16 may receive a Conditional License. An eligible 16-year-old may receive a Special Restricted License. South Carolina gives full driving privileges at age 17 under its graduated licensing framework, while an applicant age 18 or older follows the regular Class D path after meeting the adult permit-hold requirement and passing the required tests.
SCDMV completes the licensing transaction and issues a temporary driving certificate on-site. The permanent license is centrally printed and mailed, normally within 7-15 business days. The license type still depends on the applicant's age and eligibility.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
