The South Carolina beginner's permit test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. There is no official time limit for the test, but you must start before 4:00 p.m. at an SCDMV branch.
The permit test has 30 multiple-choice questions. You need 24 correct answers (80%) to pass. Keep the scoring details brief here; the broader permit-test guide covers the scoring and exam flow.
The Class D knowledge test is taken on a computer and uses multiple-choice questions. Timing limits, breaks, interruptions, and branch cutoff rules are covered in the dedicated Permit Test Time Limit guide.
Questions cover road signs (about one-third), traffic laws including SC-specific rules, and safe-driving topics such as DUI limits, following distances, and school bus rules.
The South Carolina learner's permit guide has full eligibility details.
| Category | Focus Areas |
|---|---|
| Road Signs | Warning, regulatory, and construction signs. |
| Traffic Laws | Right-of-way, speed limits, Move Over Law, turning rules. |
| Safety & Alcohol | DUI laws, following distances, hydroplaning, sharing the road. |
Are road-sign and road-rule questions mixed together or shown in separate sections? Prepare for both as part of the same Class D knowledge exam. Do not assume they will appear as separate scored sections unless the testing screen specifically shows that structure.
The test is on a touch-screen kiosk. No phones, notes, or reference materials are allowed. Leaving the testing area before finishing counts as an automatic failure.
For a standard credential, bring one accepted South Carolina address document; a REAL ID credential requires two. See the required-documents guide for the full checklist.
Do not rely on being able to change an answer later. The public SCDMV material does not promise a review-and-edit feature, so treat each selection as final unless the testing screen clearly gives you an option to revise it.
Do not expect the same questions in the same order as another applicant or a practice test. Study the underlying rules rather than memorizing a fixed sequence.
Tell SCDMV staff immediately and follow their instructions. Do not leave the testing area, restart the machine, or assume the attempt has ended on your own.
Before testing, you must meet the permit eligibility requirements and pass the vision screening. The knowledge-test fee is $2.00 per attempt, and the beginner's permit fee is $2.50 after passing.
If you fail, the retake timing belongs in the Failed & Retakes guide; do not rely on a general test-format page for the current retest schedule.
"The AI mock tests were surprisingly realistic. The explanations for road signs helped me understand the logic, not just memorize. Passed my permit test on the first try!"
