South Carolina Permit Practice Hours: 40-Hour Requirement, Form DL-008A, What Counts

South Carolina requires 40 hours of supervised driving practice for teens under 17, including 10 hours at night. Drivers aged 17 and older have no state-mandated hour requirement but must hold a permit for 180 days.

How many supervised practice hours are required in South Carolina?

The supervised driving hours needed depend on your age. These are the minimum driving hours for permit holders.

• Ages 15-16: You must complete 40 hours of practice. At least 10 hours must be at night. This is a strict requirement under the state's Graduated Driver's License program.
• Age 17 and Older: There is no state-mandated number of practice hours. However, you must hold your beginner's permit for a minimum of 180 days before taking the road test.

SCDMV logging and verification requirements for Form PDLA

Form DL-008A must be signed by a parent or guardian in front of an SCDMV employee when submitting for the road test. Logging 10 identical night entries the week before raises red flags.

• Do you need to log driving hours? Yes, if you are 15 or 16. No, if you are 17 or older.
• Do they actually check your log book? The DMV examiner will collect your signed Form PDLA before your road test. While they may not audit every line of your daily log (Form DL-008A), they can. If your driving skills are poor, they may scrutinize it for falsification.
• What if you forgot to log hours? You cannot officially estimate them retroactively. The PDLA form is signed under penalty of perjury. You must keep an accurate, contemporaneous log. A parent in Greenville had their teen's test canceled because their handwritten log showed 10 identical 1-hour 'night' entries all dated the week before the test, raising red flags with the examiner at the Laurens Road branch.
• Verification: Your parent or guardian must sign Form DL-008A in the presence of an SCDMV employee (not just a notary) when submitting for your road test. Do not sign it at home. A common rejection at the Myrtle Beach DMV on Oak Street is forms pre-signed by parents, forcing a reschedule.

What counts toward your SC practice hours?

Parent-supervised driving and night driving after sunset both count toward the 40 hours. Professional behind-the-wheel instruction is a separate mandatory requirement for under-17 drivers.

See the South Carolina learner's permit guide for complete requirements.

• Supervised Driving: Hours must be with a licensed driver aged 21 or older who has at least one year of driving experience.
• Can you count driver's ed behind-the-wheel hours? No. The 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training from a required driver's education course are separate and do not count toward the 40 practice hours. They are an additional requirement for teens under 17.
• What doesn't count: Driving with a supervisor under 21, driving outside the permitted hours (6 a.m. to midnight for most supervisors), or any time spent driving alone.

How do you log South Carolina practice hours with DL-008A or RoadReady?

Use the RoadReady app for automatic GPS-verified logging or paper Form DL-008A. Record date, exact minutes, day or night, skills practised, and supervisor initials each session.

• Option 1: RoadReady App: The SCDMV-partnered app automatically logs time, GPS route, and classifies night driving. Export a PDF log for your appointment.
• Option 2: Paper Form DL-008A: Use the official SCDMV Supervised Driving Log. Record date, exact minutes, day/night, skills practiced, and supervisor initials.

Example Logging Issue: A Columbia teen failed her first road test at the Shop Road location. The examiner asked to see her practice log after she struggled with highway merging. Her paper log showed no highway practice, only neighborhood driving, proving insufficient experience. She had to complete more hours and reschedule.

Avoiding common SCDMV delays and rejections with practice logs

Book the road test the day you become eligible. Offices like North Charleston fill 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Test vehicle lights and signals in the car park before checking in.

• Book your road test appointment the first day you are eligible to avoid a 4-6 week wait for the next available slot at busy offices like North Charleston.
• Test your vehicle's horn, turn signals, and brake lights in the DMV parking lot before checking in to avoid an automatic fail and reschedule. Examiners in Spartanburg will cancel the test immediately for a non-working brake light.
• Complete the PDLA form's school attendance section with your school office at least one week before your test to prevent a last-minute scramble that causes a missed appointment.
